Mobile technology fans are undoubtedly enjoying this year’s CTIA Wireless event, which began today in Orlando, Florida. The US equivalent of Mobile World Congress, CTIA runs from today until Thursday 24 March and is dedicated to new smartphones, tablet devices and technology.
Day one has seen a number of updates from big players, including T-Mobile, Nokia, HTC, and Samsung – and we’ve highlighted the key new devices unveiled so far at this year’s CTIA.

T-Mobile USA introduced the T-Mobile G2X and Nokia Astound handsets. The G2X phone is identical to the dual-core LG Optimus 2X – the LG version lacks the T-Mobile branding and 4G connectivity support and will land in the UK – and the Nokia Astound will arrive in Europe as the Nokia C7 smartphone.
Twice as powerful as many modern mobile phones when it comes to processing ability, the LG Optimus 2X is the first phone to come with a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor. Other features of this device include a 4 inch WVGA screen, DLNA connectivity and HDMI mirroring.
The Symbian^3 based Nokia C7 has a 3.5 inch display and ample features for entertainment and communication. Social networking integration allows for instant access to sites like Facebook, and effortless sharing of photos and videos captured on the phone’s 8-megapixel camera.
Also among today’s excitements is the HTC EVO 3D, a 3D-capable smartphone launched by HTC with Sprint in the US. Confirmed by the guys over at Pocket-lint, although still awaiting official announcement by HTC, the EVO 3D phone features a 4.3 inch qHD 960 x 540 resolution display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and two cameras – a main 5-megapixel one and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel snapper.
The EVO 3D has been spotted on Sprint’s website (below). And there is some good news for UK users tempted by the sound of this HTC device – there is a chance this handset will make it to the UK, according to Pocket-lint: “While the EVO 3D looks to be destined for Sprint in the US, sources have previously told Pocket-lint that they expect it to make it to the UK in the near future.”

As expected, Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablet today, which will sit between the original Galaxy Tab (with a 7 inch display) and Galaxy Tab 10.1 (with a 10.1 inch screen). Run on Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS with a Samsung UI on top, the Tab 8.9 also boasts a dual-core processor, and WXGA TFT LCD display.

Unveiled together with the Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Tab 8.9 and 10.1 are the slimmest mobile tablets in the world, measuring just 8.6mm. The Tab 8.9 model weighs a mere 470g and the Tab 10.1 595g – both lighter than the iPad 2 Wi-Fi model’s 601g.
“The GALAXY Tab 10.1 and 8.9 are remarkable examples of Samsung’s constant innovation and show our dedication to designing premium tablets that fit the unique needs of consumers around the world”, said JK Shin, President and Head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business. “By combining Samsung’s innovations in design and display with our exciting new user experience, we’ve created a new class of products that will lead the tablet market.”
Both tablet devices run on Google’s Honeycomb platform and come with Samsung TouchWiz UX interface. Features include Live Panel so you can customise the content on the home screen, and Mini Apps Tray which is full of commonly used apps ready to be launched. And both the Tab 8.9 and Tab 10.1 are preinstalled with Readers Hub and Music Hub, giving you access to 2.2 million books, 2,300 magazines, and 13 million songs.
