Since its launch in June 2010, Samsung’s mobile and TV app store has grown in popularity and is now celebrating its 100 million download milestone.
Samsung Apps launched with the Samsung Wave in summer last year, and reached 10 million downloads in the first 3 months alone – and then “skyrocketed” to 100 million downloads by March.
The number of apps available in the marketplace has also drastically increased – six-fold – since day one. There are now more than 13,000 apps available in the Samsung Apps store.
Kang-Hyun Kwon, Senior Vice President of Media Solution Center, Samsung Electronics said: “We are anticipating that Samsung Apps will show a rapid growth in 2011, especially with a variety of the upcoming bada device line-up. Through consistent service improvement and high-quality app selections, we will continue to offer optimised application services for Samsung smartphones.”
The application store is available in 120 countries around the world; with France having the highest number of downloads followed by Germany and Spain. These 3 countries accounted for 40% of the total app downloads.
Various apps are offered in Samsung Apps, including games, news, social networking and travel. Samsung states that the most downloaded apps include Magic Torch, Asphalt S and Need for Speed Shift, as well as navigation apps like London Travel.
To celebrate this milestone, Samsung is launching a weekly prize draw for customers. Anyone who downloads an app from Samsung Apps will be entered into the draw, with prizes including a Samsung Galaxy Tab. This promotion applies to all Bada-based handsets, including Wave, Wave II, Wave 525, Wave 533, Wave 575, and Wave 723 – and runs from today until the end of April.
