Sony Ericsson Updates Xperia X10 to Android Gingerbread

March 25th, 2011 by Caroline

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 owners have an extra reason to celebrate today – beyond the fact it’s Friday and the sun is shining – as the company has confirmed the Gingerbread update will happen in late Q2/early Q3.

Despite previously stating there were no plans to upgrade the Xperia X10 beyond Android 2.1, Sony Ericsson announced on its blog that Gingerbread will indeed land on this phone.

All users with “generic trade kits”, that is phones not customised for operators, will receive the update.

Giving the reason for this change of heart, the company cited “We have listened to our consumers.”

As far as possible, the Xperia X10 will receive “similar software” that is in the recent Xperia handsets including the Xperia Arc: “In short, the intention is that the Xperia X10 will receive similar software and functionality that we have in our new 2011 Xperia smartphones,” Sony Ericsson wrote on its blog. “The current ambition is to provide the majority of functionality of the Gingerbread platform, as well as the Sony Ericsson specific UI and features that are not  restricted by hardware limitations (for example no HDMI out). The final scope of the software is still work in progress but we are working to minimize the differences. We will get back with more details closer to launch.”

Before you upgrade your Xperia X10 device, though, Sony Ericsson has stressed the importance of backing-up your data using a third-party backup app – the Sony Ericsson Backup and Restore client is not included in the Gingerbread version. And “all your personal content and settings stored in the phone will be lost in the process”.

Not all Xperia owners will jump for joy at this news, as Sony Ericsson has no plans at this stage to upgrade the Xperia X10 Mini, Mini Pro or Xperia X8 to Gingerbread.
