O2 Reduces Price of Apple iPhone 3G S – Ahead of iPhone 5 Launch?

April 21st, 2011 by Caroline

Normally, a price cut indicates that the next-generation smartphone is about to launch. So what do you make of the fact O2 has just cut the cost of owning the iPhone 3G S?

Introducing new tariffs for the Apple handset, O2 is offering the iPhone 3G S for free from just £18.50 a month. Admittedly these iPhone 3G S deals only come with 100MB of data, 100 minutes and 500 texts, but considering how affordable this two-year contract is for a high-end smartphone, that’s pretty good!

O2 has just reduced the prices for its two cheapest two-year contracts for the iPhone, so for £29 a month you can get the handset for free, 100MB of data, 500 minutes and unlimited texts.

Often, a company will reduce its prices in a bid to clear stock ahead of a new model launch – so this O2 iPhone 3G S price cut could signal the arrival of the iPhone 5. However, this is not likely as recent reports indicate the iPhone 4 successor won’t be launched until September.

And with only a couple of deals reduced in price, perhaps the new iPhone is not imminent, after all.

Nevertheless, the fact remains that the iPhone 3G S is still an attractive handset. Thanks to a combination of design, large screen and apps, this Apple model continues to sell well. So for the new two-year deal price, are you tempted? You can view the new tariffs from O2, here.

The upcoming iPhone 5 is expected to feature a similar design to the current iPhone 4, with a flat back and thinner frame than the earlier 3G S model. It will also likely come with a faster, dual-core processor, probably like the one found in the iPad 2.
