O2 has announced this year’s winners of its green mobile phone scheme – “the only sustainable rating system for mobile phones” – crowning the Nokia E7 and Nokia C6-01 in joint first place.
In O2’s Eco Rating scheme, both Nokia smartphones scored 4.1 out of 5.

Scoring is based on the handset’s environmental impact, how helpful the phone is supporting people to lead sustainable lives, and how ethical the manufacturer is.
The O2 scheme is currently the only one of its kind and now includes 90% of the handsets in the network’s range. Last year, Sony Ericsson came top of the chart with its Elm device, which scored 4.3 out of 5 for its green credentials.
If having a sustainable handset is important to you, you may want to take a look at the Nokia E7 or C6-01 a little more closely. The E7 is designed for business and entertainment, and comes packed with features including a slide-out QWERTY, 4 inch ClearBlack AMOLED display, 8-megapixel camera, free sat nav, and a PDF viewer. The Nokia C6-01 also has an 8-megapixel camera onboard with dual LED flash and HD video support, but features a 3.2 inch AMOLED display without the physical QWERTY.
Coming a close second in O2’s Eco Rating chart, are the Samsung Galaxy Ace and Mini, Sony Ericsson X8 and Nokia C7 – all three phones scored 4 out of 5.
Head of devices at O2, Simon Lee-Smith said: “Although the environmental impact of a mobile phone may seem trivial when compared to say a car or fridge, when you consider the vast volumes of mobiles in circulation across the globe, their impact adds up.”
