HTC Desire owners will be pleased with HTC’s change of heart regarding updating the operating system the Desire runs on – Android 2.3 Gingerbread is heading to the smartphone after all!

After stating yesterday that the Desire would not receive the Gingerbread update, today we hear otherwise. Announced on the company’s Facebook page, HTC stated: “Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire.”

Back in February, it was revealed that the original Desire, Desire HD and Desire Z would all get the Android update, albeit slowly – and so HTC is now being true to its word.

This is undoubtedly a good move by HTC, as well as being good news for Desire owners, as the HTC Desire is one of the most popular smartphones of 2010. In fact, the Desire’s successor, the Desire S has been modelled along similar lines to its predecessor including the same size screen and only a slightly smaller frame.

The Desire S runs on the Gingerbread OS straight from the box, and features a Super LCD 3.7 inch display rather than the Desire’s AMOLED screen. And the physical keys beneath the original Desire’s display have been replaced with touch-sensitive ones for a smoother look. There are, however, some internal enhancements including a front-facing camera and improved battery life.

Among the new features of the Gingerbread OS heading to the HTC Desire, are a better battery life thanks to the clever apps-monitoring of this version – if an app running in the background is draining your phone of too much power, the system closes it. There is also the Manage Apps function for sorting all your apps more easily, an updated UI, a new and more intuitive keyboard, and an updated camera app.

Are you excited that Gingerbread is coming to the Desire?
