The much-rumoured, much-hyped and long, long awaited Nokia N9 has finally gone official and will be finding its way to stores “later this year”. Rumours of the Nokia N9 first began to surface and spread around the internet way back in the first half of last year and since then we’ve heard a hundred different versions of what to expect from this enigmatic little handset. So which turned out to be true? Read on…
First and foremost, the Nokia N9 will indeed be the first handset to ship running the MeeGo operating system and from what we’ve seen so far, it’s quite an impressive piece of software. The N9 forgoes physical buttons in favour of complete control through gestures on the touchscreen. A quick double tap of the screen brings the N9 out of sleep mode, and swiping gestures allow you to move between the 3 home screens and the various applications and functions of the phone. From first impressions, it seems to us like a very intuitive and smooth system, but you can check out the MeeGo UI for yourself in the video below.
Secondly, the form factor of the Nokia N9 deserves a mention. Most reports over the last year had the device pegged as a QWERTY slider, similar in design to the Nokia E7, but this hasn’t turned out to be true. The N9 features a smooth, uni-body design with no slide out keyboard and in fact no front-facing physical function keys at all (as mentioned above). The design centres around the large 3.9” AMOLED touchscreen, which Nokia claim uses “innovative laminated display technology” that makes applications look like they are “literally floating on top of the screen”.
Nokia are well known for packing high-quality cameras into their handsets and the N9 doesn’t disappoint with its 8 megapixel snapper. The camera can record HD video in 16:9 ratio and is backed up with a dual LED flash. Of course, we’ll have to reserve judgment until we’ve had the chance to take a few test shots, but all looks well on the surface here.
So that just leaves us with the internal specs. The N9 will ship with two storage options – a 16GB model and a 64GB model – and it has a full gigabyte of RAM and a 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU. It has a full range of connectivity features, including WCDMA, HSDPA and Bluetooth, and is future proofed with an NFC chip.
Finally, in true Nokia style, the N9 will be available in a range of colours – black, cyan and magenta. Which is your favourite?
