It’s at your local cinema, it’s in some rich people’s homes and now it seems, 3D is heading for your pocket with the first raft of 3D-ready mobile phones hitting the UK market.
So if you reckon 3D is super-wicked-cool and not just a gimmick that will vanish just as quickly as it appeared, which handset should you plump for?
Well, currently there are only two real contenders and one of them isn’t even out here yet (although it’s set to land any day) so your choice is somewhat limited.
But let’s take a look at them both.
LG Optimus 3D
When all the 3D-hoopla was kicking off, it seemed inevitable that the technology would soon make it’s phone-debut and it was LG who were first to strike while the iron was hot.
The Optimus 3D is a nifty piece of kit too.
Powered by Android and rocking a delicious 4.3-inch 3D LCD touchscreen and a dual-core 1GHz processor to ensure rapid performance, there’s very little to fault.
In fact, even without the 3D, this would be a tidy phone.
Sadly, there’s not a whole lot of three-dimensional content to make the most of the Optimus just yet but you can entertain yourself by taking your own 3D pictures and videos.
The handset comes with two 5MP cameras that work in tandem to create the 3D images and the effect is superb. Video is equally impressive, enabling you to capture 720P high-def 3D footage.
The Optimus also allows you to take standard pics and film with one quick jab at the screen toggling immediately between 2D and 3D.
The downside of the handset is poor battery life (which you’ll quickly drain showing off the 3D features down the pub) and a screen that looks great but can sometimes be unresponsive.
But if you can put up with those things, you’ll be very happy indeed with LG’s groundbreaking phone.
HTC Evo 3D
HTC have their fingers in every conceivable mobile phone pot so it’s really no surprise to see them pitching their tent early on at the 3D party.
The Evo 3D hasn’t quite arrived on shelves just yet, but when it does it’s sure to make quite an impression.
Much like the Optimus, you’re treated to a giant 4.3-inch display. But from there on out, you immediately notice the upgrades on LG’s handset.
For starters, you get a more up-to-date version of Android (the Optimus is 2.2, the Evo is 2.3), which does make a difference when it comes to usability and performance.
And speaking of performance, the Evo 3D also has a faster dual-core processor as well as a slightly higher resolution screen.
All of these little things add up to a pretty sizable difference.
The Evo matches the Optimus when it comes to the cameras, also boasting dual 5MP snappers, which produce exciting images and crisp video.
Combined with HTC’s awesome Sense overlay, the Evo 3D really does look the business.
The verdict
So, I suppose the question is: If I’m thinking of buying a 3D phone, should I go out and get the Optimus or wait a little while for the Evo 3D?
My answer would be to wait.
While the Optimus is an all-round good phone with very little to quibble about, the specsheet for the Evo 3D is undoubtedly the more impressive and will stand the test of time better than LG’s handset.
