BlackBerry OS 7

August 5th, 2011 by Caroline

Given the week RIM has had, with official announcements and rumours galore, we thought it would be a good time to take a closer look at the new BlackBerry operating system 7.

Announced together with the BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone back in May, BB OS 7 promises a number of nifty new extras and enhancements on BB OS 6.

So, what can you expect from BB OS 7?

RIM promises this latest version of the software offers a faster and easier user experience, making all the entertainment and corporate features that bit more enjoyable.

The browser has been improved and boasts all sorts of niceties now including “seamless panning and zooming”, faster loading of web pages, and HTML5 Video support.

Another “key new feature” is the Liquids Graphics touch display. Said to be incredibly responsive, the screen reacts to your every touch with an up-to 60-frames-per-second performance – which is sure to be appreciated, whether you’re tapping a quick email, surfing online and playing a game on the handset.

The experience is “rich and immersive” thanks to the Liquid Graphics technology incorporated in BB OS 7. And the display has an “eye-popping” 287 dpi so expect sharp and vibrant visuals.

In addition, BB OS 7 supports voice-activated searches, NFC and HD video. You’ll also get to enjoy the new BlackBerry Balance, a feature that keeps your work and personal life apart, letting you enjoy social networking alongside the more serious stuff. There are now “unique IT policy controls” to do helpful things like stopping work items from being forwarded to personal contacts.

What are the key upgrades from BB OS 6?

As highlighted above, BB OS 7 boasts a number of new lovelies. Among the key upgrades is a 40% faster browser and improved Universal Search features – including the voice-activated searches.

Which phones come with BB OS 7 pre-loaded?

The initial trio of BlackBerry smartphones to run on BB OS 7 are the Bold 9900, Torch 9810 and Torch 9860 handsets.

The recently-rumoured BlackBerry Curve 9360 and Curve 9370 smartphones are also expected to feature BB 7, which is good news as these are entry-level devices.

Can current handsets upgrade to BB OS 7?

This is where we have to deliver some bad news to those of you with a shiny BlackBerry smartphone – RIM has announced there is “no legacy support” with BB OS 7, meaning older devices will not receive any official updates.

On the plus side, the three smartphones loaded with BB OS 7 are coming later this year.
