The successor to the original BlackBerry Torch promises to outshine its predecessor with a number of improvements including the new BB OS 7 – but does the 9810 succeed?
Let’s take a closer look at these two Torch smartphones to determine how they compare side-by-side.
Design
To look at, the Torch 9810 and Torch 9800 are virtually identical. The frame size is basically the same, as is the weight, and they both sport the slide-down QWERTY keyboard and 3.2 inch touchscreen combination.
But we think this is no bad thing really because the original Torch looks contemporary and its keypad mechanism is smooth – so why change what works so well?
However, RIM has updated the display on the 9810 model. The original Torch 9800 has a 3.2 inch TFT capacitive display with a pixel resolution of 360 x 480 whereas the Torch 9810’s screen has a resolution at 480 x 640 pixels. So images are sharper, clearer on the new BlackBerry.
Performance
The Torch 9810 has been improved when it comes to performance, thanks to a more powerful processor and additional RAM and internal storage space.
The Torch 9800 has a decent 624MHz processor, 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM and 4GB inbuilt storage – compare this to the new 9810’s 1.2GHz processor and Adreno 205 graphics processing unit, 768MB RAM and 8BG of internal memory space.
Both benefit from microSD card support and the option to increase storage capacity to up to 32GB, though, which is ample for all your data, photos, music and more.
Operating system
These two phones run on different versions of the BB OS, and just like BB OS 6 delivers a number of new functions and features compared to earlier releases, BB OS 7 takes the software one leap further.
And the Torch 9810 is one of the first new BlackBerry smartphones to run on OS 7.
Among the new features is the Liquid Graphics technology, which is why the 9810 has a much more vibrant display. The screen is also extremely responsive and enables a better user experience, whether you’re tapping an email, browsing online or gaming on the handset.
The browser is whizzier and 40% quicker than on BB OS 6.
You’ll also benefit from an improved camera on the 9810. Like the 9800, the inbuilt camera has 5-megapixels, LED flash and geo-tagging, but unlike its predecessor it is now capable of 720p HD video recording.
BB OS 7 also means a host of new apps like BlackBerry Balance as well as support for NFC technology and voice-activated searches.
Summary
Naturally, the Torch 9810 would win a showdown against the Torch 9800 – after all, it would be a worry if a phone’s successor didn’t!
However, the original Torch holds its ground fairly nicely, sporting a modern look and optimised internal specs. If you’re a fan of the 9800 handset, then you’ll definitely appreciate the updated 9810 model which has stayed true to the design and added some appealing upgrades together with with new features and functions.
