Weekend Roundup: Galaxy S II, Motorola Atrix, HTC Runnymede and More

September 26th, 2011 by Caroline

It’s been a busy weekend in the world of smartphones, with new sales milestones, new handsets released together with rumours, confirmed leaks, and leaked photos.

Firstly, if numbers are your thing, you might enjoy this stat: the Samsung Galaxy S II has just hit global sales of 10 million. This makes it the fastest selling Samsung handset to-date, doubling unit sales from 5 million in two months.

And if it’s confirmed phone details you want, you’re also in luck as the Motorola Atrix 2 specs have been verified over the weekend. Thanks to ThisIsMyNext, many of the features we suspected when the Atrix 2 photos leaked last week, are now known to be true.

This upcoming Motorola smartphone will land with the name Atrix 2 and sport a 4.3 inch qHD display, 8-megapixel camera with single LED flash, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage with capacity for up to 40GB, and Webtop support.

When the original Atrix launched, it was described as a “PC in your pocket”. And it seems the Atrix 2 will have similar powers, with accessories including a HD Dock and Lapdock.

A HTC rumour, said to be linked to a “reliable source” of PocketNow’s, states the HTC Runnymede will in fact land as the HTC Sensation XL rather than the HTC Bass as previously thought.

The Sensation XL will come in two versions, one with a pair of iBeats headphones and another with a Beats Solo headphones. But the new HTC phone will not share specs with the original Sensation, coming instead with a 1.5GHz single-core processor and 4.7 inch display.

The Runnymede/Sensation XL has also starred in its own leaked video this weekend – thought to be real thanks to the Vodafone branding.

And it seems the HTC Amaze (previously referred to as the HTC Ruby) is definitely real and coming soon to T-Mobile US, according to the guys at CellPhoneSignal. Caught on camera, the HTC Amaze is said to sport some amazing (do you see what we did there?) features including a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 4.3 inch qHD display, 8-megapixel snapper and 2-megapixel front camera, and Sense 3.5.

In the land of the official, the ZTE Skate has been officially launched in Hong Kong and will be globally released, including in the UK, later this year.

Following in the footsteps of the ZTE Blade, the Skate features a skateboard-inspired design, Gingerbread OS, a slim 11.35mm frame and 4.3 inch TFT capacitive display.

And if you thought the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy Note during IFA was exciting, then you may be in for a treat. The guys over at Phandroid have word of another Samsung Unpacked event coming on 11th October, during the CTIA show in San Diego.

So what has Samsung got in store for us? Nothing’s confirmed at this stage but we suspect we could be introduced to the Galaxy Nexus Prime smartphone…

Watch this space for more news relating to these devices – and in the meantime, we’d love to know your thoughts on these announcements and rumours!
