Ice Cream Sandwich Heading to Samsung, HTC, SE, Motorola Devices

October 20th, 2011 by Caroline

Oh yes, you should have known manufacturers wouldn’t wait long before deciding to join the Ice Cream Sandwich party!

Before news of the latest version of Android, 4.0, even had time to melt, a number of the big hitters in the smartphone world indicated their intention to have a scoop of the Ice Cream goodness.

Although there isn’t a great deal of confirmed handsets and release dates yet, we know enough to begin to get sufficiently excited about launches and upgrades coming soon.

Samsung

This one won’t come as a surprise, seeing as Google and Samsung jointly unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich alongside the Galaxy Nexus smartphone.

The Galaxy Nexus will be the first handset to run on Android 4.0 when it arrives in November. And it is also expected that the Nexus S handset will receive the upgrade shortly after.

HTC

Playing things a little more cautiously is HTC, and its official statement reveals the company is trying to work out how best to integrate Ice Cream Sandwich into its devices without compromising its Sense UI.

Thanks to the guys over at Engadget, we have the full HTC statement for you on the matter:

“We are excited about the latest update for Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, and are currently reviewing its features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans. Our goal for Android updates is to give every customer an improved user experience, which means balancing each phone’s unique hardware, HTC Sense experience and the Android kernel. While our goal is to upgrade as many of our recent devices as possible, we are committed to maintaining every phone’s performance and usability first. Please stay tuned for more updates on specific device upgrade plans.”

Sony Ericsson

SE Netherlands confirmed via Facebook that all 2011 Xperia smartphones are getting Ice Cream Sandwich.

This is excellent news for current owners of Sony Ericsson handsets like Xperia Play, Xperia Neo, Xperia Ray and Xperia Arc S.

No release date or further details are available yet but thanks to AllAboutPhones we have the Sony Ericsson Netherlands Facebook post for you (translated):

“We are planning our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio after Gingerbread 2.3.4. upgrade to the next Android platform. The official Sony Ericsson communication about software upgrades will always be my international colleagues published on our Blog: http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/”

Motorola

The newly unveiled Motorola RAZR smartphone is set to receive Ice Cream Sandwich in early 2012, BGR has reported.

The Motorola RAZR is a high-end handset that is launching next month and will compete with the likes of the Galaxy Nexus and iPhone 4S, so receiving the Android upgrade will help it do battle against its competitors.
