iOS 5 Now Live: Guide on How to Install

October 13th, 2011 by Caroline

Apple has just released the latest version of its operating system, iOS 5. So if you’re not one of the million+ to pre-order the iPhone 4S, you can still upgrade your current Apple device to iOS 5.

With over 200 new features in this version, there are plenty of good reasons to do just that.

We especially like the new Notification Centre, which lets you see all your alerts in the one place. And of course, iMessage is a big plus as you can now send unlimited messages between Apple devices including photos, texts and videos. Reminders is handy if you’re a fan of to-do lists. And the new Camera feature is great if you want to be able to take instant snaps, as you can launch the camera app from the lock screen. Oh and…

The list goes on.

iOS 5 is compatible with the iPhone 3G S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, iPod touch third and fourth generations, and the iPad and iPad 2 devices.

If you’re keen to update your Apple gadget, here’s a quick guide on how to install iOS 5.

1. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes 10.5. If you need to update iTunes, be sure to back-up your Apple device before going ahead with the iOS 5 update.

2. Connect your iPhone or iPad or iPod touch to your Mac or PC and follow the onscreen instructions.

3. You should be prompted with the iOS 5 update but if you’re not, click on your device in the Devices section and then click Check for Update.

4. Select to Download Only or Update and Download, depending on how soon you’ll need your phone or device. Installing iOS 5 is likely to take some time as the file is big and the demand is huge, so if you’re short on time it’s best to download the software and install at a later point.

5. Once the software has downloaded, you can sit back and relax if you opted for Update and Download as your Apple device will receive the installation automatically.

6. When iOS 5 is installed, you’ll need to run through a few set-up screens on your device. For example, on the iPhone these will include enable location services, sign in with Apple login, set up iCloud and enable Find My iPhone.

7. Enjoy iOS 5!
