When the Nokia Lumia 800 was first introduced on stage at Nokia World, no doubt most of you thought you’d seen the device somewhere before. And that’s because it looks just like the Nokia N9.
However, scratch beneath the surface and you’ll soon see the Nokia 800 and Nokia N9 are two very different smartphones.
Which one is better? Well, there’s only one way to find out – let battle commence!
Design
The same, lovely, all-in-one polycarbonate body is found on the Nokia 800 and Nokia N9, and both share the same dimensions.
The glass on these phones runs right to the edges and there are no physical keys in sight. There’s no denying, these are great-looking handsets.
Screen wise, there are a couple of slight differences. The Nokia 800 has a 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive screen with Nokia ClearBlack display and 480 x 800 pixels resolution. This compares to the Nokia N9 which has a 3.9 inch AMOLED capacitive display with Gorilla glass and 480 x 854 pixels resolution.
So there’s really nothing between these two on the design front.
Power and OS
This is where the two phones start to express their unique personalities.
The Nokia 800 is the first Windows Phone-based Nokia handset, whereas the Nokia N9 is the company’s first MeeGo-based phone.
And in terms of which operating system is better, this really comes down to personal taste as both offer numerous features and functions. However, the one drawback the Nokia N9 has is that it’s expected to be the last MeeGo Nokia handset, which means going forward there may not be many new apps or ample support.
Power wise, the Nokia 800 has the upper hand too, sporting a 1.4GHz processor compared to the N9’s 1.2GHz chip – although the N9 has twice the RAM (1GB vs 512MB).
Images
Boasting high-end cameras with such niceties as 8-megapixels, 720p video and Carl Zeiss optics, the Nokia 800 and Nokia N9 compete well in this market.
Both phones will capture clear and sharp images as well as shoot quality footage.
The only feature that lightly nudges the Nokia 800 into the lead when it comes to images is its dedicated camera button.
Storage and battery
The Nokia Lumia 800 is only available with 16GB of storage, although you do get access to 25GB of SkyDrive cloud storage. This compares with the Nokia N9 which is offered in 16GB and 64GB models.
Battery wise, the Nokia 800 is superior – up to 13 hours of talk time and 7 hours on standby vs up to 11 hours of talk time and 4.5 hours on standby.
Verdict
As you can see, there really isn’t much between these two Nokia smartphones, apart from the OS – and it is really because of the operating system, the fact the N9 likely to be the last of its kind (MeeGo), that we crown the Nokia 800 the winner of this showdown.
The Lumia 800 has a faster processor, better battery life and runs on platform Nokia is investing heavily in thanks to its partnership with Microsoft. And this is why it gets our vote.
