Supersize me showdown!

It’s time for the new giants in Smartphone Land to go head-to-head!

We’ve seen the mighty HTC Sensation XL take on the Sensation XE, and now brace yourself for the clash of the two heavyweights – Sensation XL vs Galaxy Note.

So which smartphone-tablet will win this showdown?

Design

If massive displays matter to you on your handset, you’re in luck with both these phones. Both are crisp, colourful and multi-touch enabled, ideal for watching content and gaming on the move.

The HTC Sensation XL sports a 4.7-inch Super LCD display with 480 x 800 pixels resolution. With an all-white frame, the XL combines the large screen with a slim design of 9.9mm thickness.

And if you thought that was big, just wait until you clasp the Galaxy Note and prod at its 5.3-inch Super AMOLED screen. Strengthened by Gorilla Glass, you can easily navigate on the Note’s display, which boasts 800 x 1280 resolution, using your fingers or the included S Pen stylus.

The Galaxy Note wins this round for us because although it’s a little heavier at 178g, it has a slightly higher resolution display and even more slim frame (9.7mm).

Power and OS

The Samsung and the HTC massive mobiles both run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with the Note featuring TouchWiz 4.0 UI and the XL Sense 3.5. Which one you prefer will really come down to personal preference.

When it comes to power, the differences between these devices are highlighted – the Galaxy Note has a dual-core 1.4GHz processor and 1GB of RAM to the Sensation XL’s single-core 1.5GHz chip and 768MB of RAM.

Images

The playing field is fairly even with regard to cameras.

Both mobile phones come with an inbuilt 8-megapixel camera and HD video recording support. However, the Galaxy Note supports 1080p video whereas the XL 720p, and comes with a 2-megapixel front-facing snapper compared to the XL’s 1.3-megapixel – but both have high-end cameras that are capable of taking quality images and making video calls.

Storage and battery

The Sensation XL is available in a 16GB version only, and the memory is non-expandable. The Galaxy Note comes in a 16GB and 32GB version and features microSD support too.

And to clinch this round, the Samsung Galaxy Note has better battery support thanks to its 2500mAh battery – the XL comes with a 1600mAh battery.

Verdict

Unlike some showdowns, this fight has one clear winner – the Samsung Galaxy Note. Slim, powerful, feature-rich, well designed and perfect for displaying content and footage, the Note has the edge over the HTC Sensation XL.

Although music fans may disagree because of the XL’s Beats Audio technology, and some may be put off the Note because of the seemingly old-fashioned stylus, the Note emerges victorious because of its bigger screen, memory and battery.

If you want a colossal phone-tablet device, make sure you check out the Galaxy Note when it lands in the UK this week!
