Top Dog for Christmas

November 22nd, 2011 by Caroline

Whether you’re merrily embracing the festive season and wrapping up your Christmas purchases nice and early or firmly ignoring all signs of the approaching festivities until December arrives, there’s no denying Christmas is coming!

With only 4 full weeks, a mere 32 days, between now and Christmas, we’re thoroughly into present-buying territory. In fact, yesterday was expected to be the busiest shopping day of the year – with a cool £13billion anticipated to be spent on presents.

Of course, when it comes to the most popular handset this Christmas we’re not solely referring to presents. Maybe you’re on the verge of treating yourself to a brand new phone?

Whatever your plan, one thing’s for sure – mobile phones are going to sell like hot cakes in the run-up to the big day. So here are our predictions for what phones will triumph.

Top dog

iPhone 4S

or

Galaxy Nexus

Yes, we think the ultimate fight for glory will be between the latest Apple gadget and Samsung’s newest Android smartphone. And it could be such a close-run thing, that we can’t pick a Top Dog.

Both sport high-end features, sleek and cool designs, and cram in so much technology that they are seemingly irresistible.

We swing towards the iPhone 4S because a recent survey has shown it and the iPad 2 are top of Christmas wish-lists in the UK this year. Then again, Apple’s co-founder Steve Wozniak can’t resist the Galaxy Nexus

So you’ll have to decide which of these two is Top Dog for Christmas 2011!

Specialist dogs

We have a few extra predictions for which devices will sell well this festive season. Okay, they may not be destined to sprint to the finish line and grab the Most Sales medal, but we suspect they will be snapped up by specialist buyers nonetheless.

Nokia Lumia 800 – Camera

When it comes to camera phones, and arguably high-end phones in general, the Nokia Lumia 800 is likely to compete well. This is thanks to its 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, dual LED flash, autofocus and dedicated camera button – which is all wrapped up in a contemporary, slim frame and nestled next to Microsoft’s Mango OS and ample business and entertainment features.

LG Optimus 3D – 3D

Christmas is the perfect time of year for having fun, kicking back, relaxing and watching a movie – in 3D, on your smartphone. If a 3D phone is for you or someone you love, the choice is really between the LG Optimus 3D and the HTC Evo 3D handsets. However, although these two are similar on pay monthly options, the LG model is £100 cheaper on PAYG which we think will help boost its sales at this time of year.

HTC Sensation XE – music

This HTC handset was made for music fans, and comes with Beats Audio technology and free Beats by Dr Dre headphones. Combined with its funky black and red design, improved dual-core processor and better battery, the Sensation XE is likely to out-sell the original Sensation and compete well this Christmas.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Active – sport

With New Year resolutions also a hot topic for some at this time of year, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active phone could prove popular with sports enthusiasts. Rugged and designed for the active lifestyle, the Xperia Active comes pre-loaded with sports-themed apps and functions too.

HTC Explorer – budget

We’ve said it before – the HTC Explorer is likely to be a Christmas hit thanks to its features and small price tag. Compact and capable, this Android HTC phone can be yours for as little as £15 per month on contract or £130 on PAYG.

Which phone do you think will be Top Dog this Christmas?
