There’s been a buzz surrounding the Nokia Lumia 800 since its official unveiling. Nokia’s first Windows Phone-based device is a stand-out-from-the-crowd phone thanks to its unique single-piece frame and expansive all-touch glass front.
And now new industry figures have revealed the Windows Phone Marketplace has more than 40,000 apps.

This will be music to Nokia’s ears, as the company is braced for a big Christmas push of its flagship WP7 smartphone.
According to figures from All About Windows Phone, the Marketplace has soared since mid-October when it hit the 35,000 app milestone. Microsoft’s app store now stands at 40,189 apps published.
In the past 30 days, 85% submissions were apps and 15% were games. The most popular apps were books and reference (15%), productivity (14%) and entertainment (13%).
The majority (68%) of the apps were free, with 23% being paid and 9% paid with a free trial.
The current growth rate is 165 apps per day, and the Marketplace is expected to hit 50,000 in mid-January 2012 if it maintains this pace.
However, as with all app stores, the number actually available for you to download right now is less than the total number published. This is due to factors like certain apps being withdrawn and the fact not all apps are offered in all markets. On this basis, the US store has 33,950 and the UK store 32,332 available apps.
So how does this figure compare to other operating systems’ app stores?
Well, a direct comparison somewhat belittles Microsoft’s store – Apple’s App Store has 500,000+ apps and Google’s Android Market has around 400,000.
Nevertheless, the good news for Nokia is that the Marketplace has only been going just over a year and compared with Apple in its first year, is only slightly behind in app numbers.
Windows Phone Marketplace has a way to go yet to make a real mark when it comes to apps but with the recent release of the Nokia Lumia 800, app numbers should be on the up.
