Apple iPhone 4S Top Dog This Christmas

December 19th, 2011 by Caroline

It seems that all you want for Christmas is… the Apple iPhone 4S!

We had a sneaky suspicion the 4S model would sell faster than any other mobile phone this holiday season – and the latest Apple smartphone has indeed come out on top, landing the number one position for Christmas sales.

The FT has revealed figures from GfK, the company that gathers sales data from the big networks, highlighting that the iPhone 4S was the best-selling phone in the four-week period to 9th December.

In the first week of December, five of the top 15 devices were versions of Apple’s iPhone – even the iPhone 3GS made it into this group despite being more than two years old.

Samsung, which recently announced sales of 300 million mobiles during 2011, will still be pretty pleased, however, as the Galaxy S II also sold well and came second in UK sales to 9th December.

Nokia, on the other hand, will be disappointed by these figures. The Nokia Lumia 800, the company’s flagship WP7 smartphone, failed to make it into the top 10 in handset sales during its first few weeks – only just beating Nokia’s Touch and Type phones in the sales department, despite a rumoured whopping £20 million advertising campaign.

And the Nokia 800 didn’t feature in our most current top selling handsets update, either. Last week’s Best Mobile Contracts Friday insights also reveaedl the iPhone 4S to be the most popular mobile phone of the moment, closely followed by the iPhone 4 – but there was no Nokia in sight. Instead, Samsung’s Galaxy S II was still riding high, in third place, followed by the Xperia Arc S, a trio of BlackBerry smartphones (9300, Curve 8520 and Bold 9900) and the Desire S.

Apple is definitely having a good week, as Google earlier announced the iPhone 5 and iPad 2 feature in its top 10 most-searched terms of the year.

And if you, like everyone else, if the sales figures are anything to go by, can’t get enough of the newest iPhone, take a look at the new iPhone 4S advert – it seems even Santa needs the help of Siri to manage his “3.7 billion appointments”.
