December 9th, 2011 by Caroline

Okay, you’ve decided to buy an iPhone but now comes the tricky part – which one to buy?

With three different models available, you need to work out what features you’re after and what price you’re willing to pay, so let’s take a quick look at the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G S in a bid to help you decide.

Apple iPhone 4S

The latest iPhone has been snapped up by Apple fans during the first couple of months since its release and is tipped by us to be Top Dog this Christmas.

It may share the same design as its predecessor but inside is a far more advanced animal. The iPhone 4S is powered by a dual-core A5 chip with double the performance of the 4 model and 7-times as quick graphics processor, as well as improved 3G data speed.

The camera has also been boosted to 8-megapixels and supports 1080p video recording. And there is the iOS 5 which delivers a whole host of new features including Siri, AirPlay and iMessage – in fact, you can take a closer look at the iPhone 4S vs iPhone 4 here.

You can choose to buy this phone in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions.

If you want the iPhone 4S on contract, the 16GB version will set you back around £35 per month. Here are a few sample offers currently available:

  • Free on Three for £35 per month with 500 minutes, 5000 texts and 1GB of data
  • Free on T-Mobile for £35.75 per month with 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB
  • Free on Vodafone for £36 monthly with 600 minutes and 3000 texts
  • Free on Orange for £36 each month and 600 minutes and unlimited texts

Apple iPhone 4

This Apple phone boasts the Retina display of the current model, which is 4-times clearer than the 3G S’s screen, as well as the slim 9.3mm design. In addition, the iPhone 4 comes with FaceTime video support, iOS 4, 1GHz processor and 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording capabilities.

Available in the choice of 8GB, 16GB and 32GB models, the iPhone 4 on contract will set you back around £30 each month for the 16GB version.

Some sample deals include:

  • Free on Vodafone for £31 per month with 300 minutes, 3000 texts and 500MB of data
  • Free on T-Mobile for £35.75 per month with 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB

Apple iPhone 3G S

Although seen as outdated by some, the 3G S model is still loved by many.

With a curved, palm friendly design, the phone is powered by a 600MHz processor and is based on iOS 3 which can be upgraded to iOS 4. The screen is the same 3.5-inches in size and there is a 3.15-megapixel snapper onboard. The layout of the apps is similar and it may be chunkier than its successors but it’s the lightest of the three at 135g.

This iPhone is available in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB models. The 16GB version of the 3G S can be yours for £20 on contract with a small separate charge for the handset.

Sample iPhone 3G S contracts include:

  • An upfront fee of £29 for the phone plus £20 per month on Three with 500 minutes and 500 texts

Naturally, which iPhone you go for will depend on your budget and the number of features you expect your smartphone to deliver.
