Two new handsets have been added to Samsung’s Star range of affordable phones, the Star 3 and Star 3 DUOS.
Similar to the recently launched Galaxy Ace Plus, these two Star devices are designed to combine decent features with a small price tag.
The successors to the original Star (known in the UK as the Tocco Lite) and Star II (aka Tocco Icon), both smartphones are identical except the DUOS version is a dual-SIM model. With this version, you can have two separate numbers and just one phone, switching with ease between calls and managing both work and personal phone needs.
In the company’s press release, Samsung describes the phones as “a further enhanced version of the bestselling Samsung Star series”.
The new Star 3 handsets come with a 3-inch QVGA display, TouchWiz UI, Wi-Fi support, 3.2-megapixel camera inbuilt, FM radio and 3.5mm audio jack, and microSD slot for expanding the internal memory. Samsung’s ChatON social networking service is also included in the Star 3, which lets you share content more easily. Unfortunately, and like their predecessors, neither phone comes with 3G connectivity.
Design wise, the phones resemble the original Tocco Lite, and boast a slim 11.5mm deep frame.
Samsung plans to release the Star 3 and Star 3 DUOS globally at the end of this month. At this stage there is no mention of whether these mobiles are UK-bound – if they are, there is likely to be a name change.
Following the pattern of the earlier Samsung models, the Star 3 is expected to land over here with the name that features the word “Tocco” in it. And pricing should be similar too – Tocco Icon deals start from £15 per month on contract, and the phone is available for as little as £50 on PAYG.
We’ll keep you posted on whether the Star 3 models will come to the UK. In the meantime, we’d love to hear your views on these budget Samsung smartphones.
