Samsung Galaxy S II Outperforms Other Smartphones In The Extreme Cold

February 16th, 2012 by Caroline

If you have plans to frolic in arctic conditions, be sure to take a Galaxy S II with you because this premium Samsung phone has just been crowned the hardiest smartphone in the cold.

Finnish magazine MikroPC awarded the S II as the winner, after it continued to work even in -30°C temperatures.

In an independent test designed to see if handsets can cope in sub-zero temperatures, the Galaxy S II came out on top – outperforming its 14 rivals.

Fifteen of the most popular smartphones on sale in Finland were put to the test, including 5 Samsung devices. At the Weather Room in the VTT Technical Research Centre at Espoo, Finland, the handsets were exposed to extremely cold conditions.

The atmosphere inside the research lab was controlled closely by the team. The temperature began at 0°C and was then lowered in five-degree stages until the phones stopped working.

The Galaxy S II kept on going until temperatures dropped as far as -35°C!

It was the only phone to carry on working at -30°C, although all 5 Samsung handsets coped at the -20°C mark.

Last October, Samsung confirmed sales of the original Galaxy S smartphone had surpassed the 20million milestone and that 10million S IIs had been sold. And many of you no doubt have your eye on the upcoming and long rumoured next-generation device, Galaxy S3 model.

Already super-popular, it seems there’s now an extra reason for snapping up the Samsung Galaxy S II! We wouldn’t have been surprised had the Galaxy Xcover rugged phone excelled in this test (it wasn’t one of the fifteen phones that took part), but for the high-end S II to shake off arctic conditions so easily is no mean feat.

Are you impressed?
