So, how will the first Sony sans-Ericsson-moniker smartphone fare against a scaled-down version of the big hitter Galaxy S handset?
Both the Sony Xperia S and the Galaxy S Advance offer dual-core goodness together with Android know-how and a plethora of features and functions to entertain you on the move.
…But which one has the edge?
Well, there’s really only one to find out – it’s showdown time!
Design
With good looks and large screens, these are handsome handsets. The Xperia S has a bigger and more advanced display, though, boasting a 4.3-inch HD Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine and incredible pixels resolution of 1280 x 720.
The Advance model of the original Galaxy S is distinctive thanks to its curved frame that lends it a look of the Galaxy Nexus. The phone has a 4-inch Super AMOLED display with 800 x 480 pixels resolution – which is vibrant, but lacklustre when compared directly to the Xperia S’s super-sharp screen.
Size wise, these two S-branded smartphones have similar dimensions and slimness, although the Galaxy S Advance is marginally more compact. However, given the difference in displays, this is to be expected.
So it’s a pretty close-run thing when it comes to the design of these two phones. Adding extra kudos to the Sony model’s impressive display, though, is its transparent strip that runs along the bottom of the screen – in our mind, the Xperia wins this round fairly comfortably.
Power
Both handsets run on Android Gingerbread OS, but the Xperia S has more power than the Galaxy S Advance – it has a 1.5GHz dual-core chip and 1GB of RAM whereas the Samsung handset has a still-quick 1GHz dual-core processor and 768M of RAM.
Images, battery and storage
The main camera on the Sony Xperia S is stupendous and on a par with the Nokia N8 when it comes to megapixels. This device has an inbuilt snapper with 12-megapixels and Exmor R sensor technology for capturing great shots even in low light. There is also a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera so you can make video calls too.
The Galaxy S Advance also has rear and front cameras, although only the frontal one matches the Xperia S – its main camera has 5-megapixels and LED flash.
When it comes to memory, the Sony smartphone wins too as it comes with 32GB of internal space. The Samsung phone does have up to 32GB of memory available, but comes in 8GB and 16GB versions. The batteries are similar, with the Xperia S supporting around 8 hours of talk time or 450 hours on standby, and the Galaxy S Advance’s 1500mAh expected to deliver the equivalent.
Verdict
It depends how you’re judging this contest.
For sheer power, impressive and distinctive design, display, and camera, the prize must go to the Sony Xperia S.
However, throw price into the mix and the outcome isn’t so obvious. Although pricing is still TBC for these handsets, the Galaxy S Advance is expected to feature an affordable price tag, which makes it a very decent mid-range device indeed.
So…You decide – which smartphone wins?
