The Design

Housed in a conventional candybar form factor and measuring 106 x 46 x 14.5 mm, the Alcatel OT206 weighs a very light 60g and comes in a number of body colors you can choose from – apple green, orange, deep red and grey. Its display features a 1.5-inch CSTN screen with a perfectly square 128 x 128 pixel resolution and 65k color support.

Alcatel OT206 Specifications

The budget handset is as basic as any mobile phone you can get and is a real throwback to pre 21^st century mobile phones. You get a dual band GSM (900/1800) with a US version (850/1900) without any of the data connectivity options like GPRS/EDGE on the 2G network. It sports a miniUSB port but only for charging purposes.

Like most basic handsets, memory is minimal with a phonebook that can take in only 100 contact entries at the most and a call records memory that tracks 20 dialed, 20 received and 20 missed calls. The Alcatel OT206 comes with the standard SMS with T9 predictive text input but no MMS. To while away your time waiting for anything, you can listen to its monaural FM radio with RDS or play a couple of basic games.

There’s an onboard VGA fixed focus camera at the back but you can’t go about snapping to your heart’s content as there’s little to no memory to store them in. It’s powered by a standard Li-Ion battery rated at 650 mAh that allows up to 7 hors of talk time and 400 hours in standby mode.

Considerations

Alcatel could have added a little more meat into its memory to allow for some more photos to be stored or a microSD slot could have really come in handy for that. Then, again, it could have simply taken out the camera to make a really unpretentious spartan phone.

Verdict

The Alcatel OT206 is an excellent phone that does the job with none of the frills and should make a good buddy as second back-phone to your more featured handsets. Even your kids will love it. With a SIM-free price of £20 at eBay UK, it’s difficult to find fault on a phone that has no pretensions and actually does an excellently job as a phone on the road.
