If you are in the market for the best really cheap mobile phone, very few can beat the Alcatel OT222. Made by one of the largest networking equipment makers in the world, Alcatel-Lucent, the nearly spartan basic handset was released in July 2010 and should appeal to a practical minded market with a slight fashion sense.

With some really capable features for its price, this is the one handset to bring along on a camping trip, and mountain trek, a pizza dinner or a movie weekend when the thought of losing or breaking it won’t really matter.

The Design

Using a clamshell form factor, the Alcatel OT222 measures a petite 90 x 44.5 x 11.3 mm when closed and weighs in at a pocket-friendly 71g. There are no external displays when closed like what we find in the more fancy clamshell handsets out there notably from Motorola but this one lives true to its basic spartan design, inside and out. Once open, you get a basic and perfectly squared 1.45 inch CSTN display with a 128 x 128 pixel resolution and 65k colors.

If you’re among the budget crowd that still want some dash of distinction to what you’re holding against your ears, the handset obliges with two colors of your choice - titanium grey and cherry red.

Alcatel OT222 Specifications

Don’t expect this to be a 3G phone or one with WiFi and GPS. As a budget phone, it’s your basic dual band GSM with class 10 GPRS data speeds of up to 48 Kbps. Alcatel has the good sense not to put any pretensions to a browser capability which can be a pain at speeds equivalent to dial-up modem speeds. It has no Bluetooth but you still get a miniUSB v1/1 for syncing your contacts with your PC.

The Alcatel OT222 sports no camera. Entertainment is almost non existent and you’re lucky it comes with a stereo FM radio with RDS but no 3.5mm headphone jack. That means you get a proprietary stereo earphone using the miniUSB port as connector. Just like missing out on the browser, you won’t get any media playback feature which is just fine as the handset does not have enough user memory or a microSD expansion slot for a multimedia feature to make sense.

You get a standard Li-Ion battery rated at 650 mAh for a generous 7 hours of talk time and 500 hours of standby time – one of the highest for a basic handset.

Considerations

Don’t play around too much with the clamshell as its hinge wobbles. Don’t bother changing the poor quality earphones unless you can find a USB-to 3.5mm adapter so you can use your favourite earphone. Also don’t put it on silent mode if you want the alarm to sound.

Verdict

For a £9 mobile phone, it can be the height of foolishness to even complain about any of its faults or shortcomings. In fact for that price, the Alcatel OT222 is simply the best for what it is designed to do. As a basic communications tool on the road, it does the job well, simple and straight to the point. It’s the kind of mobile phone you need when you already have an iPod and a good P&S camera in your back pack.
