The Design

The budget Alcatel OT303 housed in a conventional candybar form factor, fully rounded on both ends, exudes simple elegance. With a very pocket friendly weight of 66 grams, its 107 x 46 x 12.1 body accommodates a basic 1.8-inch CSTN display with 128 x 150 pixel resolution and 65k colors. The façade sports the usual alphanumeric tactile keypad and 5-point navigational button at the center and comes in a choice of body colors of titanium grey, turquoise and cherry red.

The Alcatel OT303 is as basic a feature phone as any for the 21^st century. It’s just your standard tri band GSM with class 10 GPRS data speeds of up to 48 Kbps on 2G. There’s no faster EDGE data speeds but the handset does have a WAP 2.0 HTML browser so you can still surf at speeds equivalent to dial-up connection.

You just need a GPRS data plan. There’s no WiFi or Bluetooth and data connectivity is supported from its older miniUSB v1.1 port which allows you to connect to your laptop or desktop PC.

There’s a nod to being an imaging phone with a rudimentary VGA fixed focus camera but that’s all. With small image file sizes, sending them via MMS becomes a breeze right after using the feature. Just don’t take too many pictures as memory is less than generous.

Internal memory is confined to 2MB plus a phonebook that can take in 800 contact entries. There’s no microSD slot provision for eternal memory expansion and that’s just fine as the spartan handset has no pretensions to being an entertainment phone that requires generous memory storage for multimedia files.

But you still get a monaural FM radio with RDS for those boring moments on the road. It even comes preloaded with a couple of games to keep you busy on those moments.

The handset is powered by a standard li-ion battery rated at 650mAh which, when fully charged, delivers up to 9 hours of talk time and 300 hours of standby time.

Considerations

As a bare basic GSM phone at its price point, the Alcatel OT303 is sure to be a most appealing option for the practical minded markets. Its CSTN display may pale in comparison with the TFT displays in similarly priced handsets but it does the job. Nokia, Samsung and LG have models that a pose a serious competition to it so at the end of the day, it faces an uphill challenge against brand preference.

Verdict

Its stand-out feature is its lightweight body that can feel unobtrusive and nearly nonexistent in your pocket. The company has had a solid reputation for building no nonsense budget handsets over the years and should hold its head among similarly designed and priced handsets form the Big Five in the industry.
