It’s no secret that Alcatel mobile phones are among the most affordable out there as they are mostly budget entry level handsets. The Alcatel OT800 is no exception. Released in July 2009, Alcatel’s first full-QWERTY handset in the Blackberry-esque styling is a fun feature entry level phone selling on a pay as you go deal for less than £50.

The Design

Just about all brands have a stable of models that carry the Blackberry form factor. It’s a candybar with a landscape display and a full-QWERTY keyboard instead of the conventional candybar sporting a portrait or square display and an alphanumeric keypad. The Alcatel OT800 looks like a Blackberry Curve measuring 111 x 58.2 x 13.9mm and weighing a pocketable 103g. It comes in an assortment of richly striking colors that are sure to appeal to the youthful markets – ocean blue, cherry red, hot pink, titanium grey and apple green.

The QWERTY keyboards on Blackberry hands have always been a source of contention among reviewers as to whether they are good enough for the fingers. But unless you have large fingers, most QWERTY keyboards of this size can do the job and the OT800 is no different. Its display is modest at a 2.2-inch TFT with QVGA resolution and 256k colors, but that’s the most you can expect from a budget phone.

Alcatel OT800 Specifications

As a budget phone, don’t expect 3G, WiFi or GPS. International roaming is also limited as the Alcatel OT800 is just a basic dual band GSM (900/1800) with class 12 GPRS/EDGE data connectivity for up to 48 Kbps on the 2G network. You will need a GPRS plan for online surfing with its Opera Mini browser for speeds equivalent to those of dial-up modems. Local data connectivity is served with Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and microUSB v2.0.

Its imaging features gets a rudimentary 2 megapixel fixed focus camera with basic video recording. Entertainment on the road starts with a stereo FM radio with RDS and a media player for MP3 music and MP4 video. There’s no 3.5mm headphone jack but you can listen on stereo wireless headsets thanks to its A2DP profile support.

It comes with an onboard memory for just 20 MB but that’s not a problem as it gets microSD external memory expandability for up to 4GB. Talk times are a generous 9 hours, definitely one of the longest in the market. It also allows up to 450 hour sin stand by from its standard Li-Ion battery rated at 850 mAh when fully charged.

Considerations

When nearly all handsets in the market are offering 8 GB to 16 GB external memory expansion, the OT800 can be downer for just having 4G. But this may be sufficient to carry all the MP3 and MP4 files for most people. You just need to have at least 2-3 of those cards on hand.

Verdict

The Alcatel OT800 carries a set of features that has more market relevance in 2005 than in 2010. But for it’s price, there’s nothing to complain about. It fact, as Alcatel’s best mobile phone so far, it is also the best value full-QWERTY handset on the market.
