The growing Android community scores another new member with the French Alcatel coming out with its very first Android smartphone. Just when everyone thought the French mobile phone maker is receding into the sunset, it gets back with some hefty punches.

Never mind that it’s going to be just another entry level handset that Alcatel is known for. This time the Alcatel OT980, even just running the older Android 1.6 Donut OS, joins the more upscale Android bandwagon that can only define a landmark product for the unpretentious French mobile phone maker.

Entry Level Features

The OT980 is another entry level smartphone that comes under the Orange deal with a choice of two body colors in Cherry Red and Silver. It is expected to be cheaper than the HTC Tattoo’s SIM-free price of around €280. It comes with a Palm Pre-like QWERTY portrait sliding form factor measuring 112.5 x 60.4 x 15.9mm and runs on the 600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor with an onboard 192 MB of RAM and 70 MB user memory that can go up to 16 GB using its microSD memory expansion slot.

It’s a tri band GSM (900/1800/1900) radio on 2G with class 12 GPRS/EDGE data connectivity on 2G and a dual band UMTS with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA on 3G. For an entry level Android, this one gets WiFi 802.11b/g for hotspot surfing and the local data connectivity options for Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0.

There’s also SatNav functionality served by a built-in GPS with A-GPS support and a digital compass. It gets a Li-Ion battery rated at 1150 mAh that can deliver u to 8 hours of talk time on 2G, 35 hours of music playback and 400 hours of standby time.

Its display features a 2.8-inch TFT LCD resistive Touchscreen with QVGA resolution and 256k colors. It gets a gravity accelerometer for UI auto rotate convenience. Until now, just about all its features read like one coming from an upscale mid-priced smartphone. But wait till you hear about its imaging where the cost cutting axe fell to bring the price down. You get an outdated 2 megapixel camera with video recording and nothing else. We would imagine it should get geo tagging at least from its GPS receiver. But there’s none of that.

Multimedia on the Alcatel OT980 gets no FM radio but you have the media players for popular audio and video file codecs and a 3.5 mm audio jack together with its A2DP profile support on Bluetooth. It gets preloaded with Google Maps, a YouTube client, Google Talk and Google Search.
