Released in June 2009, the LG GM205, also known as the GM200 Brio in other markets, fortifies the Korean LG Electronics’ push to cover the widest markets with low end budget handsets. A rather basic mobile phone at the right price, this phone can get you far among practical minded markets.

The Design

As an affordable music candybar, the LG GM205 comes with a rather cheerful appearance and can be perfect during a casual weekend at the malls. It has no pretension to being anything than basic music handset measuring 106 x 48 x 14.4 mm and weighing a pocket-friendly 85g.

It comes with a 2-inch display that’s pretty much basic even for handsets five years ago and is nothing to write about. It has a 176 x 220 pixel resolution with 256k colors. The alphanumeric keys are generally comfortable to use though it can stand improvement in tactile response.

On one side is a microSD card slot and the other side carries a proprietary LG port and FM radio/player keys. As a music phone, it has a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top

The LG GM205, is a tri band GSM (900/ 1800/ 1900) with class 10 GPRS/EDGE for data speeds of up to 236.8 Kbps. As a budget handset, there’s no WiFi or GPS but you get decent data connectivity options like Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for wireless and wired data transfers, respectively.

As a music phone, it has stereo FM radio with RDS and a built-antenna so you can just listen to it on its built-in stereo speakers plus one woofer with the need for a wired earphone to serve as an antenna.

Its media player supports playback for video files in the MP4 and H.263 formats as well as music files in the MP3, AAC, WMA, AMR and Midi formats. It also comes with Dolby Mobile to enhance sound quality. Apart from the built-in speakers, you can listen using wired headphones via the 3.5mm audio jack or wirelessly using stereo Bluetooth earphones.

Imaging comes with a rudimentary 2 megapixel fixed focus camera with QCIF video capture at 15fps frame rates. Internal memory is capped at a nearly useless 14 MB but that is no problem as you get microSD memory expandability for up to 2GB. Talk times are generous at 8.5 hours and standby at 450 hours on a standards Lithium Polymer battery at 1100 mAh when fully charged.

Considerations

A 2GB microSD card isn’t much to store all the MP3 files you need but is good enough to carry a day’s worth of nonstop music. They’re generally cheap these days so you can have more of them for various sets of MP3 music each day.

Verdict

As a budget music phone, the LG GM205 does the job admirably. With ample talk times, it’s your main communications and entertainment tool while on the road. Forget about its camera. You’d be better off with a good separate point and shoot camera.
