The China-based Lenovo Mobile, the 3rd largest mobile phone maker in China, takes on the Big Five in mobile phones with a swank clamshell Full-QWERTY communicator in the Lenovo LePhone unveiled at the 2010 CES. This is Lenovo’s second Android smartphone(after the Lenovo Mobile 01 or Miro 01) powered by the 1 GHz Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon and running the latest Android 2.1 Éclair OS.

With former parent company Lenovo buying back its mobile division, this further shows how the mobile telephone business has become the darling of tier-1 PC makers as a natural direction to diversifying its core business.

Distinguishing Qualities

The LePhone is not your ordinary Android smartphone and could well qualify as a superphone in the same league as the iPhone and the Nexus One. With imitation as the sweetest form of flattery, the LePhone unabashedly flaunts its voracity in innovating by taking off from the best of what other superphones have.

In fact, its specs mirror that of the Nexus except that it comes in a distinguishing form evolving from the LG Versa and the Nokia Communicator. It has the Communicator’s clamshell full-QWERTY keyboard that can be detached like in the Versa and stored elsewhere, leaving you with a thinner and lighter touchscreen monolith. This makes the snap-on QWERTY folding clam shell act as a docking station.
But even its QWERTY keyboard comes with uniquely arranged curvy keys concentric around its navigational D-pad right at the keyboard center. The ergonomics may be unorthodox requiring some getting used to but the aesthetics are simply without peer.

Lenovo takes liberties on the open source Android by putting in its LePhone some features that while differentiating from other Android implementation, takes a nod to many other upscale smartphone OS like its card-type multitasking abilities from the WebOS of Palm and a main menu design that hints of the iPhone OS.

Amidst all that distinguishing marks wrapped in an elegant high-polish chrome exterior finish that’s impressive for its 12mm thinness, the LePhone sports a high-spec 3.7-inch wide-VGA (480 x 800) capacitive touchscreen that defines other flagship touschreeners out there.
It sports an accelerometer, limited gesture control and voice-activated call interface. It’s a 3G phone on the WCDMA radio with WiFi 802.11b/g for hotspot internet surfing with local data transfer and synching options for wireless Bluetooth 2.1 or wired microUSB 2.0.

There’s SatNav from its GPS receiver with A-GPS along with a 3 megapixel shooter at the back with video recording and a VGA camera up front for your 3G video calls. It’s also socially conscious with integrated Facebook and Twitter apps.

Latest Lenovo LePhone News

For those of you who do not care much for net books and laptops, Lenovo is a very well known manufacturer of portable computers and accessories. Their laptop designs are very stylish and are packed with pretty good hardware (at a slightly steeper price than others). Anyway, just like Acer, Lenovo just announced that they too will be bringing out a mobile phone. The LePhone is a Snapdragon Android phone with an AMOLED touch screen; seems like PC developers seem to like the Android OS. The Acer Liquid is also a Snapdragon powered Android, but was pretty disappointing due to the under clock...
