The Design

The Nokia 3710 Fold is, as the name suggests, housed in a conventional clamshell form factor that measures 89 x 47 x 15.2 when closed and weighs a light 94g. There’s a secondary display when closed and it’s a monochrome TFT screen with 128 x 160 resolution.

When open, what you get is a rather outdated 2.2-inch TFT screen with QVGA resolution and 16 million colors typical of most Nokia handsets. Pitched to a young and fashion-centric crowd, the handset comes in a choice of three colors of black, plum and pink.

This Nokia 3710 Fold is a 3G phone on a tri band UMTS minus the high speed data connectivity support. You still get the standard 3G data speeds of 384 Kbps which is just a bit better than the 297 Kbps speeds over Class 32 GPRS/EDGE speeds from its quad band GSM (850/ 900/ 1800/ 1900) radio on 2G.

There’s no WiFi but local data connectivity comes from its Bluetooth v2/1 with A2DP for wireless data transfers and synching as well as microUSB 2.0 for the wired option. It also has an integrated GPS with A-GPS support.

Its camera features can be expected from any budget handset. It has a 3.2 megapixel resolution, LED flash and no auto focusing facility. It also has a rudimentary VGA capture and features a secondary VGA videocall camera on the front.

With pretension as a music phone, the Fold comes with a stereo FM receiver with RDS and the music players for MP3, eAAC, WAV and WMA audio files as well as MP4, WMV, and H.263/H.264 video files.

In-built user memory is decently capped at 70 MB but what matters more for a music phone is its microSD external memory expandability for up to 8GB so it can store all your compressed music and video files.

It is powered by a standard 860 mAh li-ion battery that delivers talk times of 4 hours on 2G and 3.3 hours on 3G with up to 24 hours of continuous music playback. It also delivers up to 288 hours of standby time on a single charge.

Considerations

Nokia’s current struggles to keep up with Samsung and other smartphone makers have left it retaining its market share in the wider low end to mid tier mobile phones. The Nokia 3710 Fold is another example of an outdated clamshell design that is sure to delight traditional Nokia fans and no one else. Pretensions to a music phone that doesn’t even have a 3.5mm headphone jack is really more of an inconvenience to music lovers on the road, but it does the job well if you have an adapter of sorts.

Verdict

This is another Nokia phone that does a capable job like any other on the market. There’s no standout feature and is just continuing the tradition that has made Nokia the largest and most popular mobile phone maker on the planet.
