As a 2G phone on the quad band (850/ 900/ 1800/ 1900) radio, you get class 10 GPRS/EDGE at data speed of up to 236.8 kbps. Local high speed data connectivity gets Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and A2DP for wireless data transfers and microUSB 2.0 for the wired option. There’s the same SatNav functionality from an integrated GPS receiver with A-GPS support.
What pushes the Plus ahead of its predecessor is its WiFi 802.11b/g, a feature that was not a technological hurdle to put at the time the first Pixi came out, as even mid-tier non-smartphones had it in spades. Now Palm is expecting its Pixi users to upgrade to the Plus just for this feature. Not a bad idea if Palm gives it for Free to former Pixi users like any upgrade patch.
And like the Pixi, the Plus uses the same WebOS but in a higher 1.3.5 version running on the same 600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7627 engine with a dedicated graphics accelerator engine. As it is aimed to a youth, it’s as sociable as any SNS handset. It comes with a native Facebook application and a single view Palm Synergy aggregating its LinkIn phonebook contacts with calendar, SNS, Yahoo contacts and instant messaging.
With an appealing price point of around €150 the Plus sits well with its target audience. Getting the same 99.5g waistline at a slim 111 x 55 x 10.9 mm, the Pixi Plus enjoys the same 2.3-inch Half-VGA display with 256k colors and capacitive touchscreen technology.
You get the same gravity accelerometer for auto rotate viewing and a proximity sensor for touchscreen auto-disable in a call. It also gets the same Pixi imaging at 2 megapixels of resolution with LED flash, geo tagging and a nod to video recording its predecessor didn’t bother about. Multimedia features are identical with the Pixi as well as the 3.5mm audio jack and A2DP support over Bluetooth wireless stereo listening.
The
Palm Pixi Plus enjoys the same generous 8 GB of onboard memory. The Plus could have added a microSD slot, but no. It remains closed to that option. 8 GB is often more than enough for media files to last you 2-3 days on the road. And that’s all you get on the Plus.
