When Samsung announced it was going all young and funky by releasing a budget smartphone aimed at teens, some were a little sceptical. The Galaxy Y Pro however proves to a surprisingly good phone.

Fashioned to look vaguely similar to a Blackberry Curve with its QWERTY keypad, the Galaxy Y Pro comes with the kind of features you’d expect from a high-end smartphone. It runs an Android OS and is packed with social networking apps to keep its adolescent owners happy.

The Galaxy Y Pro was launched alongside the Galaxy Y as part of Samsung´s new naming convention for its Galaxy range of phones. Y is at the more affordable end and is intended for the younger phone user, Y being short for youth. Many Android phones now come with features to be enjoyed by younger users, including social networking, YouTube and good entertainment features and the Galaxy Y phones are no exception. But with some less pricey hardware under its wing the Galaxy R Pro offers a fantastic Android experience at a much lower cost than higher end devices like the Galaxy S2.

While the Galaxy Y adopts a similar touchscreen design to the Galaxy S2 the Galaxy Y Pro comes with a combination of touchscreen and BlackBerry style keyboard. Indecently, the "Pro" is the part of Samsung´s new naming convention that signifies the inclusion of a keyboard.

The Galaxy Y Pro includes a 2.6 inch capacitive touchscreen with 256k colours which is comparable in size to a standard BlackBerry phone´s screen. Like many of RIM´s QWERTY offerings the Galaxy Y Pro also includes an optical trackpad for additional means of navigating around the interface. This interface is of course Android Gingerbread combined with TouchWiz. As an Android phone you get access to Android Market for apps and games as well as excellent entertainment features with music, video and streaming online video support.

Like the Galaxy Y this phone supports 32GB micro SD cards. This is quite a bit of room for media and is a great amount of storage for a phone of this price range. Also included are great 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity options allowing you to make use of the various online features including YouTube, social networks like Facebook, as well as a string of Google services including Google Maps.

Although this phone is supposedly aimed at the younger generation (hence the ´Y´ in its name), it also comes with some features that prime it more towards the professional side of the market as is typically the case with phones of this form factor. The Galaxy Y Pro includes ThinkFree document editor so that you can view or edit documents on the way to work.

The only other things left to say is that the Galaxy Y Pro comes with a slightly better camera than the standard Galaxy Y, although the 3.2 megapixel camera is still not the most fantastic camera to be found on a phone. It does include video support and face detection and for most people it will suffice for day to day purposes. The Galaxy Y Pro offers a good range of Android features stretching from entertainment to messaging and comes in a much more affordable package than many other devices in the Galaxy range from Samsung.
