If you want the modern features of a smartphone without the expensive price tag, consider the Samsung S3370. The 2.6-inch resistive touchscreen requires a little more pressure than its capacitive counterparts, but the layout and size of the menu means you're unlikely to do any damage.
Personalise your home screens with a variety of apps, or simply take advantage of the inbuilt social networking features. It also comes with 3G and wi-fi, and you can even call friends and family via Skype. Don't expect much from the 1.3MP camera, but the S3370's price mitigates its lack of features.
In a word or two
The Samsung S3370 is an affordable 3G phone perfect for staying in touch with friends in multiple ways.
The Design
With a similar design to the Samsung Champ and Samsung Genio phones, the Samsung S3370 is one of the latest affordable touchscreens to be launched by the company. A little taller than the Champ, the screen is bigger at 2.6 inches although the technology is also resistive.
The screen requires more pressure than phones with a capacitive screen but the layout of the menu supports easy presses with large icons and nicely spaced features. And the Samsung S3370 runs the TouchWiz UI so you can personalise the home screens with apps for weather, social networking, news or otherwise. Plus, there is the Samsung Apps Store available for downloading additional apps too.
Specifications
Available on PAYG through the 3 network, the Samsung S3370 comes with various apps to help you keep your phone bills to a minimum – while ensuring maximum enjoyment from your phone. There is Skype onboard so you can make free calls to friends also on Skype, and Windows Live Messenger for instant messaging.
This may be an affordable phone but that does not mean it bucks the current trend of being social networking-enabled. As well as apps for Facebook and MySpace, the Samsung S3370 displays live updates on the home screen. Similar to the Social Hub on the Samsung Wave, Friend Stream on the HTC Wildfire and MotoBlur on the Motorola FLIPOUT, this means you can view communications from various sources on the one screen – although the Samsung S3370 will likely not offer such an extensive service as these higher-end phones.
Music wise, you can listen through the phone’s speakerphone although we need to confirm whether there’s also a 3.5 mm audio jack on the Samsung S3370 too. We do know the DNSe (Digital Natural Sound Engine) technology features so the sound quality should be high. There is also an FM radio on the phone.
Considerations
The Samsung S3370’s camera is only 1.3-megapixels and although it comes with smile detection and video functions, the images will not be high resolution.
Verdict
The Samsung S3370 is affordable and capable with support for 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. You can enjoy Skype calls and social networking on this phone, and all for a reasonable cost.
