Sony Ericsson Spiro deals on contract

Sony Ericsson Spiro deals

For almost an eternity, that’s 8 months too long in the technological timeline, the Sony Ericsson product line has been silent about its W range of Walkman phones. The last W handset seen was its flagship W995 leading many in the mobile community to think that the Walkman would now be an artifact in mobile telephony.

Surprisingly, it’s not sorely missed. After all, just about all the handsets from the Japanese-Swedish phone maker have fine music playback capabilities, including its budget handsets. But after releasing more than 130 million Walkman phones to the world markets since its debut in 2005, the Walkman line gets resurrected in the new Sony Ericsson Spiro, a mid-to-low end Walkman handset that comes in a slider form factor that comes in four body colors to choose from – stealth black, contrast black, sunset pink and spring green.

Multimedia Features

Walkman handsets seldom disappoint as music phones but they’re not necessarily the best as Nokia and others have models that easily trump any Walkman phone anytime. The Spiro is no different as its multimedia features qualify among the mid-tier music phones that boast of a stereo FM radio with RDS and music decoding support for audio files in the MP4, H.263/H.264 audio file formats.

You get this from the Spiro’s latest Walkman 4.0 player. There’s the useful TrackID that when launched allows users to get the artist and song name of whatever music you can’t identify as the handset samples the music for identification. You also get access to its online PlayNow.

The handset has a speaker phone, though not in stereo, but music listening gets a fuller stereo experience when using a set of high fidelity headphones hooked to its 3.5mm headphone jack for wired stereo listening. The music phone of the 21st century won’t be complete without A2DP profile support over Bluetooth so you can use those wireless stereo earphones as well. It also comes with the usual video playback support for videos in the MP4, H.263/H.264 file codecs.

Basic Phone Features

There are no 3G, WiFi or GPS features. Sony Ericsson obviously pitches the handset to the widest possible market for its resurrected Walkman line and you can easily confirm its modest features starting with a dual band GSM (900/ 1800) phone on the 2G that gets a version for the US markets.

2G data connectivity gets class 10 GPRS/EDGE for up to 236.8 Kbps so get reasonably fast internet browsing and downloading on a GPRS or EDGE data plan. There’s also Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP for wireless data syncing and microUSB 2.0 for a wired option.

Its slider body measuring 92 x 48 x 16.8 mm when closed accommodates a smallish 2.2-inch TFT LCD QVGA screen with 256k colors which is just fine to display images and videos taken from its sub-par 2 megapixel fixed focus camera typical of budget mobile phones.

Internal phone memory is almost non-existent at 5 MB but it still enjoys external memory expandability for up to 16GB from its microSD slot which should be adequate enough for all your multimedia files that can take advantage of its Walkman heritage while on the road.
