Musical maestros - and even those who just like listening to a good tune - will love the Sony Ericsson Spiro.

Stylishly designed to resemble the W395 Walkman, this inexpensive handset features an onboard MP3 player with a Track ID function. While the latter lets you record a song and learn the title and artist, you can browse the PlayNow music store to purchase tracks. Social networking is just as easy, making the Spiro a splendid choice.

Sony Ericsson Spiro Preview

In a word or two

The Sony Ericsson Spiro is a stylish mobile phone which features a Walkman together with communication options which range from conversations to interacting online on social networking websites.

The Design

Glance at the Sony Ericsson Spiro and you will know it’s a Sony Ericsson device – the simple elegance of its frame and attributes are very familiar. And the look and feel are reminiscent of the W395 Walkman phone and the W205 Walkman model.

The layout of the buttons beneath the 2.2 inch screen makes it clear that chatting and listening are equally important to the Spiro. The normal call/call end keys together with select and back are present – but there are also play keys (forward, rewind, stop, start) for easy access to the MP3 player onboard the device.

Like the Zylo which launches together with the Spiro, the mobile phone has a slide-down numerical keyboard for dialling numbers and writing text messages. The physical keys make finding your way around the menu straightforward, for example there is a so-called one-touch access to the TrackID function of the music player – hit this button to record a song that is playing, and the Spiro will let you know who’s singing, which album the song’s on and the name of the song itself.

Sony Ericsson Spiro Specifications

As a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone, the Spiro naturally boasts musical abilities. There is the aforementioned TrackID option as well as the PlayNow music store, FM radio and 3.5mm audio connector. Unfortunately, though, there is not the FLAC format which debuts on the Zylo handset.

Social networking also plays a big part in all the Sony Ericsson Spiro has to offer. Apps like Facebook and Twitter are pre-installed so you can share moments, memories and photos with friends and family online – the 2-megapixel camera has a 2x digital zoom and video capability.

Considerations

Sony Ericsson has not told us the price of the Spiro but we anticipate it to be cheap.

Verdict

If the price is right, the Sony Ericsson Spiro is an inexpensive, musically high-end mobile phone which features a Walkman player, a modern design and social networking apps. A full review is coming soon.
