The Design

The handset sports a touchscreen monolithic form factor that comes only in black. Measuring 102 x 50 x 12,5 mm and weighs a comfortably 83g, one of the lightest in the market, the handset exudes the elegant simplicity shared by many other touchscreen hand sets that’s dominated by a 2.8-inch TFT LCD resistive touchscreen with wide-WVGA (240 x 400) resolution and 65k colors.

Don’t expect auto rotate screen orientation as it has no accelerometer sensor.

The T-Mobile Vairy Touch 2 is basic quad band GSM (850/ 900/ 1800/ 1900) with class 10 GPRS/EDGE data speeds for up to 236.8 Kbps. As a budget phone, don’t expect 3G, WiFi or GPS. But its EDGE speeds should be good enough for its preloaded web browser, email client and Instant Messaging. Local data connectivity is supported by the standard microUSB 3,0 and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP for the wired and wireless options, respectively.

There’s a rudimentary 2 megapixel shooter with fixed focus and basic video recording so you can send them via MMS. Entertainment with multimedia features come from a monaural FM radio and the capable media players for MP3, AAC, WMA and WAV audio files but no video playback facility. You can listen over its speakerphones but you can go wireless stereo listening from its A2DP profile support over Bluetooth. There’s no 3.5mm headphone jack but its USB port connects to its proprietary earphones.

Onboard memory allows for up to 1,000 phonebook entries and comes with microSD external memory expansion capability for up to 16 GB. Talk times are minimal at 4.8 hours and up to 300 hours on standby from its standard Li-Ion battery rated at 800 mAh when fully charged.

Considerations

It seems like a waste that a capability to read 16 GB microSD cards has no video playback capability on a relatively large 2.8" screen when even a 1.5" sWaP Active wristwatch phone has one.

Its camera certainly can benefit some improvement but for attaching low resolution pictures with low files sizes, it does the job. 65k colors can be a bit embarrassing on an expansive screen as you get some color banding visible for certain images that have large areas of single color hues with what should show a smooth gradation like the sky fading into the horizon.

Verdict

While the handset leaves many of the features the market has taken for granted on a handset, especially on a touchscreen phone with a large screen, the T-Mobile Vairy Touch 2 gets the job done nearly good enough for those features it has. At less than £35 on PAYG from T-Mobile, complaining about what it doesn’t have can be overkill.
