Making a successful product better is one thing, but creating the same item on a different market can be a challenge. That’s what Toshiba has done on the new Toshiba K01. It succeeds the world’s first Snapdragon Windows smartphone, the TG01 and crafted it to appeal to a market that has grown fond of full-QWERY sliders.

Yes, you can say that the K01 is really the TG01 with a QWERTY tactile keyboard. But it won’t be able to claim the same thinness as its QWERTY half shell adds 3 mm to it. It is still a looker that gets more curvaceous than its direct rival in the XPERIA X2 from compatriot Sony Ericsson.

Updating while Retaining TG01 High Marks

Apart from a QWERTY sliding half-shell, the K01 gets an updated hardware feature set with an AMOLED capacitive touchscreen that allows higher picture contrast displaying blacker blacks. Without the power-consuming always-on backlighting common with conventional LCD TFT displays, its AMOLED display promises to squeeze out the most from same slim 1,000 mAh Li-Ion battery used in the TG01. Other than these, it’s essentially the same TG01 under the hood.
  • Its AMOLED capacitive display gets the same stunning 4.1-inch WideVGA screen size that makes mobile movie watching a rare treat for a multimedia enabled smartphone. The only downside here is its limited 65k colors constrained by a lackluster Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. You also get the dame gravity accelerometer for auto rotate viewing convenience and shake control
  • It is powered by the same Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon processor clocked at 1 GHz with the same phone memory consisting of 512 MB ROM and 256 MB RAM and microSD expandability for up to 32 GB.
  • The Toshiba K01 is the same 3G smartphone on the dual band UMTS with HSDDPA/HSUPA broadband speeds for fast internet downloading as well as a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE on the 2G. It comes with WiFi 802.11b/g for hotspot internet surfing and local data transfer options with wireless Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR with A2DP and wired USB2.0. SatNav functionality gets the same built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS and QuickGPS that uses a dedicated Qualcomm gpsONE navigation CPU.
Inheriting most of the TG01 features includes a modest imaging that is now considered outdated for high flying upscale smartphone in its class. It comes with the same 3.2 megapixel autofocus digital camera with geo tagging and video recording at VGA resolution and 30fps. 3G videos calls also get support from a front-facing secondary VGA camera.
