Phones4U are one of the more recognisable mobile phone retailers within the UK, largely due to their quirky advertising campaigns. Founded in 1987 as Midland Mobile Phones specialising in wholesale distribution, the company shortly moved on to opening high street stores under the name Phones4U and now has over 440 stores across the UK. In 2006 Phones4U was bought by private equity firm Providence Equity Partners for an impressive £1.46 billion.

The new owners of Phones4U still retained hold of the many arms of the original company, which besides high street phone retailing was also involved in distribution, warehousing, phone accessories and insurance. Having a business model spread out over these wide areas means that Phones4U do not need to rely on third party distributors for their stock.

The Phones4U website is easy to navigate and allows you to search through mobile phone offers by manufacturer, model or network provider. By having close ties with all the major networks they are able to offer some very competitive contracts. As well as offering many great deals they also offer free laptops, Playstation 3´s and Nintendo Wii´s or cashback with many of the phones in their online and high street stores. They also stock a large range of mobile phone accessories including Bluetooth headsets, phone chargers and cases. They are also not just limited to selling phones as they also retail laptops and broadband packages to accompany them.

It should be noted that as Phones4U also operate a mobile phone insurance business that they may try to ´hard-sell´ insurance when it may not be wanted. This had been a source of criticism in the past but Phones4U has made a conscious effort to limit the pushing of their insurance plans. Despite these criticisms Phones4U has won many awards for best advertising, most effective marketing as well as being the best high street and online mobile phone retailer.
