Although nothing´s changed in the physical appearance of the Apple iphone 3G S, we think that just (although only just)enough has been done to make this launch worthwhile. With a 600mhz AMD processor and 256K RAM, the phone is now running more than twice as fast. So whether you´re flipping between applications, browsing graphics-heavy websites or playing games, everything should now be happening far smoother and faster than ever before. Some other features worth noting include:
- Video-recording and editing, with VGA footage being captured at 30 frames per second
- A tap-to-focus addition to the still camera, which has also been upped to 3 megapixels (still some way behind its competitors)
- Voice activation
- Voice memos
- Compass
- Landscape Qwerty keyboard
Look and Design
Here´s where many might feel let down, but we´re not so sure. Fair enough, there´s basically no change at all from the previous iphone, but then as the one-letter added “Apple iphone 3G S” suggests, this should be seen as an update rather than a new launch. And also, why should Apple try to change what´s still a clear winner in the looks department? We don´t doubt there´ll pull something incredible out of the bag come whenever it is in the future they launch the next iteration in the iphone evolution, but for now we´re happy to let them keep things as they are.
There is one – albeit invisible – change to the phone´s surface though. An oleophobic coating has been added to the screen. This means the screen is more oily-fingerprint resistant than ever before. And Apple now recommends simply cleaning with a dry cloth (before they suggested a slightly damp one)
Available in black or white, and with either 16 or 32GB storage, there´s sure to be a combination to suit you.
Overall
There might not be enough changes here to persuade you to upgrade from the Apple iphone 3G, but if you´re in the market to upgrade from the original iphone, or if you´re coming to the smartphone market for the first time, this really is the best choice you could make this summer. If you´ve never used an iphone before you are in for an absolute treat. With the all-new speed of this version, the sheer beauty of the sliding, scrolling and flipping transitions will simply take your breath away. But the best thing about the 3G S is that, as stunning as it is, it´s what´s inside that matters, and Apple have done a fantastic job of adding to and beefing up just about everything that was already great about the previous model.
