HTC Smart Review
In a word or two
The HTC Smart is a clever smartphone designed to make your life easier and not cost you a fortune.
The Design
The HTC Smart is a good looking, black and grey mobile phone. Compact in size and with a clean look, the phone looks smart and feels pleasant to hold as you type or call friends.
There are three touch buttons aligned along the bottom of the 2.8 inch screen. These enhance the experience, giving you shortcuts to the menu, the previous screen or web page, and call options. The screen display on the HTC Smart is bright and distinctive with separate widgets for all the various applications.
There is an on-screen keyboard which features a number of characters per key – good for short messages or dialling numbers. When you want to interact online or send an email, you can simply turn your HTC Smart on its side, give the phone a tap, and launch the QWERTY keyboard in landscape mode. Although the touchscreen is resistive like on the HTC Tattoo, the keys respond well and each press creates a larger popped-up version of the key so you can be sure you’ve pressed the right one.
HTC Smart Specifications
The twin highlights of the HTC Smart are its affordability and its user-friendliness. As the name of the smartphone suggests, the handset is designed to ease your busy lifestyle – or as HTC puts it: “to help you be a smarter you”. The Scenes function lets you create a different mode for a different mood. For example, during the week you may want all the useful applications to be on the home screen, such as calendar, email and web browser; but at the weekend, having direct access to the phone’s music player, camera or social networking sites like Twitter, may be preferable. You can also personalise a Scene to meet your needs and wants, and as well as widgets, you can decorate the home screen with different wallpaper too.
Run on Qualcomm’s Brew platform – which is also seen on the INQ Mini 3G – the HTC Smart phone is fairly fast with a 300MHz processor inside. This processor compares to the one found in the iPhone, which is just over 400MHz, so considering the price this is a good feature.
Another nice touch of the HTC Smart is its Sense user interface. Sense improves the whole mobile experience by offering straightforward navigation and quick access to social networks. Also found on the HTC Hero, the user interface integrates Facebook and Flickr with your list of contacts, in the People widget, pulling through details including birthdays and photos so that you have all the information in the one place.
Considerations
Some of the more advanced features found on smartphones have been sacrificed to keep the complexity and price low.
Verdict
The HTC Smart is easy to use and offers plenty of means to communicate and keep you entertained thanks to features ranging from a 3-megapixel camera and Bluetooth to instant messaging and a reliable web browser.
