Motorola FLIPOUT Early Review
In a word or two
The Motorola FLIPOUT is a social networking-centred handset, with a twist.
The Design
Square is the new rectangle – at least when it comes to Motorola’s newest smartphone, the Motorola FLIPOUT. The device has a 2.8 inch touchscreen and a full QWERTY keypad which flips out from behind the screen. There is no denying the design is striking and the FLIPOUT remains fairly compact at 67 x 67 x 15.8mm, and weighs just 118g.
Following in the footsteps of the BACKFLIP which, as the name suggests, flips backwards to reveal its keyboard, the Motorola FLIPOUT combines a modern design with practicality. And this isn’t the first square phone to reach the market – the design is similar to the Nokia 7705 Twist and the recently launched Microsoft Kin One.
Motorola FLIPOUT Specifications
This phone may be powered by a pretty fast 700MHz processor, but in other respects the Motorola FLIPOUT is not technically advanced. It does run on the Android 2.1 OS and so comes with a range of Google apps including Google Maps, but it is expected to not support either 3G or Wi-Fi – which could make maximising the social networking features a little cumbersome.
When it comes to social networking, though, the Motorola FLIPOUT will spoil you. There are pre-installed apps for Twitter, Facebook and MySpace, as well as access to the Android Market for browsing and downloading further features. And on top of all this is the MotoBlur UI, also found on the DEXT and QUENCH phones. This merges all your communications from email to tweets into one easy-to-read stream so you can instantly reply and keep your own online profiles updated, all in the one place. MotoBlur is similar to the Friend Stream on the newest HTC device, the Wildfire.
The Motorola FLIPOUT also has a 3.15-megapixel camera onboard with a video option so can take quick, albeit basic, snaps on the move. The MP3 player means you can plug in your preferred headset into the 3.5 mm audio jack and listen to music on your phone, although there is no FM radio. You can increase the internal memory, though, for storing plenty of music, photos and data on the Motorola FLIPOUT – up to 32GB via a microSD card.
Considerations
There is no support for 3G or Wi-Fi connectivity on the Motorola FLIPOUT.
Verdict
The Motorola FLIPOUT does look good and is sure to appeal particularly to a younger audience who want a social networking, fun device for a low cost.
