Motorola ROKR ZN50

Summary

The ROKR raises the bar again for Motorola after what everyone´s admitting has been a trying period for the manufacturer. As the name suggests, this is a great music-playing handset, with some serious sound boosting features that´ll make your favourite tracks sounds as good as ever. But best of all, there isn´t a better designed phone in its category currently on the market. Motorola have managed to make just about the first futuristically attractive touchscreen phone available, and we´re glad it´s finally happened!

While the ROKR might not be as impressively full of the very best stats as a few other phones out there, you should ask yourself if you really need the most megapixels, fastest internet connections and all that jazz. If the answer is yes (and if your wallet is full!) then look elsewhere, but if you´re comfortable with a set of decent rather than ground-breaking features, the ROKR could be just what you need.

Details

Running on the attractive Panorama User Interface, the ROKR is about as close to a Google Android phone as you can get without buying an Android phone! The customisable 3-panel homescreen system looks very similar to Google´s effort, and we´re more than a little impressed with it. The 3 panels can be flipped between at the touch of a finger, letting you create three different places from which to navigate all the phone has to offer. You might set up one screen to give you rapid access to all the phone´s organisational features (the calendar and GPS, for example), while you can program another to give instant access to the superb media-playing functions (video player, music player, etc.). The whole system is surprisingly intuitive and you´ll have your whole phone customised in no time at all.

The ROKR is also just about the most stylish touchscreen handset you can currently buy. With the alpha-numeric keypad closed, it looks like a race car with its streamlined curves and high-quality plastic finishing. Once the keypad is out the phone also manages to seem remarkably solid and well balanced, something that´s unfortunately rare in the majority of slider phones that come our way.

So if it´s a relatively cheap, music-playing, cool-UI-sporting and ridiculously good looking phone you´re after... look no further. The ROKR is for you, and if you scout around smartly, you´ll find just the right deal to suit your needs too.
