Nokia 6700

Summary

An evolution of the Nokia 6300 (voted Mobile Phone of the Year by What Mobile Awards) this is a phone that´s an instant classic, that will last you for the length of your contract and far beyond (even with the massive contracts being touted these days). We can´t speak highly enough of the 6700, which might surprise many given its understated looks and specs, but for us that´s a sign of real class.

While it has all the smartphone functionality you´d expect, it does it all with a quiet calmness that is rare these days, but that we appreciate and are sure you will too.

Details

As a fully spec´ed up smartphone, we barely need to tell you what this phone is capable of: it can handle all the 3G, Bluetooth, HSDPA and similar you can think to throw at it. It´s also got Nokia´s open source web browser onboard (previously only available on S60 handsets) which, for our money, is about as good as mobile browsing gets these days. The 5MP camera is also more than adequate and comes with a wealth of features that´ll keep your occasionally snap-happy fingers satisfied (as will the dedicated camera button to get into it in the first place). There´s also Nokia Maps pre-installed to work in tandem with the GPS to bring you all the turn-by-turn navigation and other map-based utilities you´d expect.

And there´s two brand new features to add to all this two. First up is Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC). This uses sensors for working out the amount of ambient light around you, then checks to see what application you’re using and adjusts the screen´s brightness and contrast accordingly. If you´re just sending an SMS, for example (rather than playing a game which would be brighter and more powerful), then the screen will be dimmed appropriately, putting less of a drain on the battery and therefore improving your standby time. Secondly, there´s Uplink Noise Cancellation (UNC ). This improves call quality by monitoring two microphones: the first for your voice, the second for surrounding environmental sounds. The software then balances the two.

But aside from all this the 6700 is just a stone cold design classic. With its real metal finishing touches (including metal keys), one of the most solid feeling cases available and an all round air of high-end design, you´ll be more than happy to carry this thing wherever you go.

Conclusion

As you can probably guess, we love this phone more than just about anything else out there at the moment. If your confident enough to go for the understated, does what it needs to and looks damn cool doing it kind of things, then the 6700 could well be the perfect partner for you for however long you sign up for. A true classic.

Excellent phone. Replaced my Nokia 6233 with it. Before that, I had the old 6310. This is the best phone they make at the moment, just as the previous ohones were at the time. It is easy to use, gets a good signal, and if you must be distracted by non phone features, it has them as well.. Auto focus camera, GPS etc.
