Nokia C5 Early Review
In a word or two
The Nokia C5 is a straightforward smartphone which combines ability with simplicity.
The Design
With a traditional bar shape, the Nokia C5 manages to look sleek and modern thanks to the stainless steel finish and compact frame. As slim as the iPhone, the C5 is shorter and narrower, and significantly lighter at just 89 grams.
The look is unlike most smartphone currently on the market, as there is no touch-sensitive screen or slide-out QWERTY keyboard in sight. Instead, there is a 2.2 inch colour-display screen and a numerical keypad. If you find high-end mobiles with virtual keys a bit fiddly – even when the screen is 4.3 inches like on the HTC HD2 – then you are sure to enjoy the Nokia C5. The finger-friendly size of the keys combined with a sensible layout ensures confident mobile communication. There is even a large 5-way navigation key to speed up your web browsing or switching between apps.
The Nokia C5 comes in either a white or warm grey case, and has a clean, smart look. You can personalise the home screen with your preferred apps and wallpaper, with plenty to choose from in the Ovi Store.
Nokia C5 Specifications
A Symbian smartphone, the Nokia C5 has support for all your social networking, communication and navigation needs. Plenty of apps are pre-installed for instant enjoyment, including Facebook, YouTube, MySpace and Flickr, and you can chat with friends via IM services like Google Talk. The C5 lets you email and share your world with friends – whether you want to upload images or videos taken on the phone’s 3.2-megapixel camera onto your preferred network site or via Ovi Share. And the frontal camera means you can make video calls for work or social reasons.
Ovi Maps is onboard the Nokia C5 and comes with free walk and drive navigation. The walk navigation includes voice guidance and 3D landmarks so you can find the easiest route to your destination; the drive navigation has turn-by-turn navigation which will keep you updated with the latest traffic news, speed limits, and automatically re-route if you take a wrong turn or select an alternative route.
Music wise, the Nokia C5 has the ability to keep you entertained. To complement the music player and the expandable internal memory to up to 16GB via a microSD card (to hold all your songs) is an FM radio and 3.5mm audio connecter.
Considerations
There is no Wi-Fi onboard.
Verdict
The Nokia C5 may not be as advanced as most smartphones but its affordable price tag means it is competing with the likes of the HTC Tattoo, a budget touchscreen phone. As an alternative to a handset with a touchscreen, and for simple communication, the C5 should compete well – full review coming soon.
