Details
You may well have heard the claim in relation to other phones before, but the N900 really is computer-grade performance in a mobile handset. The latest in a line of ´internet tablets´ from Nokia, this is actually a big step forward compared to all the previous iterations.
Mostly vitally, the N900 is the next phase in the evolution of Maemo software. Taking its inspiration from the world of desktop computing, this open source, Linux-based operating software delivers a PC-like experience on a handset-sized device. The Nokia N900 is though a huge evolution from all previous generations of Internet Tablets. Running on the new Maemo 5 software, the N900 you can have literally dozens of application windows open and running simultaneously while taking full advantage of the cellular features (that is, you can still make calls!), touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard. Multi-tasking isn´t an empty promise with this thing, it´s a thoroughly impressive reality.
"With Linux software, Mozilla-based browser technology and now also with cellular connectivity, the Nokia N900 delivers a powerful mobile experience," according to Anssi Vanjoki of Nokia. "The Nokia N900 shows where we are going with Maemo and we´ll continue to work with the community to push the software forward. What we have with Maemo is something that is fusing the power of the computer, the internet and the mobile phone, and it is great to see that it is evolving in exciting ways." So while other software platforms, such as Symbian, are still going to be powering Nokia´s other smartphones, Maemo is the true tech-heads software option.
Under the hood, the N900 packs a powerful ARM Cortex-A8 processor, can allocate up to 1GB of application memory and uses OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration. The result is all that impressive, PC-like multitasking, allowing you to not only run but switch between applications simply, all running content being constantly available through the dashboard. The panoramic homescreen can also be completely personalised with all your favourite widgets and applications.
Web browsing, as you´d expect, is equally impressive. The N900 features a super high-res WVGA touchscreen and fast internet connectivity (10/2 HSPA and WLAN), combining together to give you an internet experience that´s more or less identical to that you´d get at home. The Mozilla-powered browser lets you view websites just as they intended to be see, and online videos and interactive applications are as vivid as can be thanks to full Adobe Flash support. Maemo software also updates automatically over the internet, meaning you´ll always have the very best, and very latest possible versions.
Messaging – whether texts, emails, or similar - on the N900 is a breeze thanks to the full slide-out QWERTY. Setting up email (and, crucially, combining all your different accounts) happens with only a few button presses. Text message or IM exchanges with friends are shown in one view to help you keep track of all your conversations, and everything can be kept tidy in separate windows so you always know who´s who, and what they said!
The Nokia N900 boasts an impressive 32GB of in-built storage, but if that isn´t enough you can also expand up to 48GB via a microSD card. For photography, the Maemo software and the N900 come with a new tag cloud user interface that will help users get the most out of the 5MP camera and Carl Zeiss optics. Perfect for quickly tagging a photo without missing out on the fun as it happens around you.
Conclusion
What more can we say... you simply can´t find a more technologically impressive phone. This is not just in the top-of-the-range market, it is THE top-of-the-range phone you can buy.
