Details
You all know about the N97... well, you´ll be glad to hear that means you also know about the N97 Mini too. Some people have suggested that the Mini was rushed out to try and counter the fact that there´d been a relatively lukewarm response to the launch of the N97, but after two million sales in three months, we think those are nothing but scandalous industry rumours.
And having given the Mini a test drive, we think it´s more than likely going to sell just as well.
The specs, then, are practically the same as on that original bestseller. So what exactly is different?
-
The internal storage is perhaps the biggest change in the numbers: it had been reduced to 8GB from the 32GB of the original. However, an additional 16GB can be added using a microSD card, meaning you can make up almost all that shortfall with not a lot of money.
-
They´ve also lopped off 0.3-inches from the screen. This leaves it at 3.2-inches – more than enough for almost anything you can throw at it, in our book, and coming in at a very useful 16:9 ratio, of course.
-
The QWERTY keyboard is smaller than the original, but still feels very natural and easy to use. The D-pad on the left has also been scrapped in in favour of more traditional arrow keys, which saves a lot of space. The keyboard is actually even more tactile than the previous iteration.
So, put simply, there are two reasons this thing exists: price and size. Because of the chops and streamlinings as detailed above, this thing is going to be retailing significantly cheaper than its big brother, which means that whether you´re going for a contract of forking out the lump sum for pay as you go, you´ll be saving either way. Then the size point of view is a more important shift for us. Some of you might be happy with the heft of the original N97, but for us it was just a inch and a gram too far. Luckily though, this version is an absolute dream to hold onto. Nokia have put so much work into the design of this thing that its 14.2mm thin frame actually feels more natural to use than the larger N97.
The Mini also sports new homescreen widgets and a host of other minor tweaks and improvements. These include new homescreen customisation tools, extra widgets and flick scrolling. It’s also the first Nokia device to sport Lifecasting – a new partnership between the world’s largest social network, Facebook and Ovi. Lifecasting enables users to update their Facebook status directly from the device’s homescreen. Your location details can also be updated as you go too, thanks to the synch up with the GPS, enabling a whole new level of social sharing and communication.
The N97 mini is based on the same tilt stand display design of the original N97 big brother meaning that whether you´re watching movies, playing games or just scrolling through you photos, you´ll always get the best possible picture.
The Nokia N97 mini also works seamlessly with everything the Ovi Store has to offer, meaning that all the new apps, widgets, ringtones and other bits and bobs are available to you at the touch of a button.
Nokia Maps is also pre-installed, along with its voice navigation for driving or walking, giving you access to over 150,000 points of interest available through Lonely Planet guides. restaurants through Michelin Guides and numerous other invaluable navigation aids.
Up to 12 days standby time are on offer and up to 28 hours music playback (in offline mode). The 5-megapixel camera comes with dual LED flash and video light, along with a Carl Zeiss Tessar lens.
Conclusion
Smaller, cheaper, and just downright better than its big brother... we can´t recommend this little thing highly enough. Hunt yourself out a deal as quick as you can.

Nokia N97 Mini Customer Reviews
I just bought the N97 mini this week (ie Nov 11) and it has a lots more features than my previous N95. I am also currently using HTC Tytn II and Blackberry Bold. It is more of fun phone for me.
What I like about it:
1] the Garmin GPS acquire the satellite signals almost as fast as my GPS device
2] It boots up faster than the Tytn II (but is slower than the Blackberry)
3] It is kind of cute and fits nicely in my hand
4] the OVI allows direct updating of latest software (but not sure if it actually works since all the softwares are up todate)
5] the build seems solid and does not have any creaking sound when I squeezed it
6] the slide is smooth and firm
7] the speakers are as good as the N95
What I don't like:
1] the touch screen is not very sensitive
2] when I touched an icon, sometimes another icon was highlighted (hopefully the next firmware update will resolve this)
3] the stylus is not practical - too thick and short
4] it attracts finger prints like a magnet
5] I can't surf on the WLAN if I turn off the phone connection (would appreciate any advice here)
6] the battery only last 7 hrs when I use the GPS for 45 minutes and surf the net for less than 2 hours (the N95 and Blackberry easily last 3 - 4 days)
7] have to open the battery cover to access the SDHC card and sim card (unlike the Tytn II)
8] camera lens is not protected (unlike its bigger brother)
9] pouch and SDHC card not included in the package
In Malaysia, the mini is more expensive than its bigger brother.
had one delivered the day after release,
useless, had a brand new sim card, brand new 8gb memory card too, i had nothing saved to the phone eg phone numbers, texts, music or pics yet everytime i tried to go through the phone i got a message saying memory full !
had no applications running at all so how can this be !! i read reports of people having to juggle things between storage places like c drive,e drive etc.. who wants a phone where you have to keep moving files?
nokia still yet to find a model that will be as succesful as n95
looked forward to the mini as it seemed to have everything and had to send it back within a day or 2, i'l be waiting for another model to tempt me the mini has left a sour taste in my mouth
Amazing Phone! Yet I am currently on my second which has just died before my eyes. First one was slow, got on a sunday kept coming up with memory full yet had nothing on it which was not understandable. however, by the tuesday this died, it froze and cudnt do much, went back to Vodaphone and got a new one. now this one was much faster and nothing wrong with memory however as i have just gone to text it is like it has switched off, i have tried turning it on, tried taking the battery out and tried charging it... i will be taking it back tomorrow. not sure whether to get another.
I am only able to imagine if N97 mini is "good" compering to N97, how bad is than N97. I am not satisfied at all with this phone. Software is not quiet good, too slow, download from Nokia server too slow, so many different functions for shops like buy this, buy that, I mean if someone want to go in shoping, of course it will not be that much stupid to buy via mobile phone. Alone phone is not practical, battery is not that good like it writes and etc.
