Introduction

The Samsung M200 is a low end phone which has recently been announced and is perfect for basic users – however, the phone is very limited in terms of features and is simply an ok looking phone with a poor range of features. If you’re looking for a basic phone then this could be it but in my opinion you can get a better phone for the same price. I’ve always liked Samsung phones but I’m not really sure what the aim was with this phone – it only has a 1.3 mega pixel camera, a basic media player and very poor features elsewhere – even in the low end of today’s market this phone is boring.

Specifications

The Samsung M200 is very limited in terms of features and is very different in terms of looks to any other Samsung I’ve ever seen. The phone is basic in look, features and design and I think it’ll be at the bottom end of even the low price range. The features that are available include a 1.3 mega pixel camera with video recording capabilities, some games, an FM radio and an FM recorder (which I have to say is quite a good feature) and finally an organiser. Other than that, this phone is very basic and doesn’t offer anything more than the simple calling, texting and email features of any mobile phone.

What I find most unusual about this phone is the design. Samsung have always designed very good looking phones but I feel that this phone is severely lacking in the design front and doesn’t appear to be a Samsung at all – it looks very much like the Nokia 6300 and I’ve never been a fan of Nokia design. However, there are some positives to this phone so I won’t keep slating it. The phone has a basic set of features which is useful for people who aren’t looking for something so flashy and I think this could be a great first mobile phone for someone who has never used one before.

The price range is in the low end which is also good for people on a budget who just want a phone that makes calls and sends texts. I have to say though, that other than that you’re pretty limited. The phone’s camera is awful and even at 1.3 mega pixels doesn’t offer anywhere near like the quality of other phones on the market. Again, looks wise this phone is also boring and doesn’t offer the service quality that Samsung usually provide. It’s a real shame as well because I don’t think many people are aware of the point of this device – it’s just a basic mobile phone but Samsung don’t really need to bother with it in my opinion.

Looks

Looks wise, I’ve said before, this phone looks like the Nokia 6300 and I don’t think that’s a good thing. Also the phone has fewer features than the Nokia 6300 and is quite frankly a bit boring. The phone isn’t a style phone at all and is simply a basic square phone with square keys and a square screen. For basic users who only want a phone to make calls it’s great but I’m not sure that the market for basic users is big enough for Samsung to have bothered. Most mobile phone users are getting greedier and want more and more features and this phone from Samsung simply doesn’t deliver on any level.

If you want a basic phone for making calls and sending texts then this phone is perfect but surely you’ll want more than that. The mobile phone market is growing rapidly and the normal camera size is about 3.2 mega pixels so to release a phone in 2008 with a poor 1.3 mega pixel camera is simply bizarre. Even for the low end price range this phone is rather boring and basic and I think to be honest, Samsung should’ve known better than to release this phone this year.

Design

Design wise, this phone is basic again and doesn’t appear to have any unique features – one thing I did notice is that this phone has an FM recorder which means you can record radio shows but I have to say it’s an unusual feature because you’ll only be able to record the radio while you’re listening to it and this means that you would be hearing the show anyway so it’s rather pointless in my opinion. In terms of the applications, everything seems to run smoothly but “everything” is one or two features so I don’t think it’d be hard to get applications and software to handle this anyway.

Overall

All in all, I think the Samsung M200 is a great phone for really basic users and if you’re a first time mobile phone user you’ll probably appreciate the simplicity of this phone. However, for users who want a little more than a 1.3 mega pixel camera and calling features you should look elsewhere because literally that is all you get with this phone. It’s a shame because to be honest the looks of this phone aren’t even that good and usually when Samsung design a basic phone they always make an effort with the design. This phone appears to be a bad attempt at the Nokia 6300 and I’m really not impressed.

It’s a real shame too because I’ve always loved Samsung phones; I think I’ll be putting this down to the designer having a really bad day and I’ll try to thing of the beautiful Samsung Pixon in order to remember why I’ve always loved Samsung phones. I think a lot of people will agree that even for a basic phone this is too boring and doesn’t say Samsung at all – it says Nokia and in my opinion that isn’t a good thing at all. I don’t have anything against Nokia but their phones are useless when compared to the likes of Sony Ericsson and usually Samsung.

Maybe they had a bet on to see who could make the worst phone and let’s be honest Samsung would have won by a mile. However, this phone isn’t all bad – it does do what it should as a basic phone. I think I’m just overly disappointed because I’m so used to loving Samsung mobile phones. The M200 however, is a complete shock to me because Samsung don’t appear to have bothered putting any effort into any part of this phone at all.
