Samsung Wave S8500 Review

In a word or two
The Samsung Wave S8500 is a high-tech smartphone which features the new Samsung Bada OS and multiple applications.

The Design
The design of the Samsung Wave S8500 concentrates on the super AMOLED screen and its astonishingly vibrant display rather than its slim-line frame. The display on the 3.3 inch touchscreen is incredible, using technology found in Samsung’s high-end TVs with very high resolution, deep colours and a real brightness. The screen has support for 16 million colours – and it shows.

The technology of the Samsung Wave S8500’s screen does not stop there, though, as it is capacitive. With support for multi-touch so you can easily zoom in on an image with the pinch of your fingers, the responsiveness of the screen is on a par with the iPhone.

With an inbuilt accelerometer, you can flip from portrait to landscape view by just turning the Samsung Wave S8500 on its side. And typing is effortless on this phone thanks to the QWERTY on-screen keyboard.

Samsung Wave S8500 Specifications
The first phone to run on Samsung’s new Bada OS, the Samsung Wave S8500 has the TouchWiz interface too. Friendly and straightforward to use, TouchWiz features up to 10 home screens which you can decorate with widgets according to your personal preferences. You can simply find the widget you want, drag and drop it onto the home screen for one-press access to the app. Customising the home screen is not the only easy aspect of the interface – another example is the connection shortcuts you can activate by tapping the top of the screen.

As you would expect from such a device, there are multiple communication options onboard the Samsung Wave S8500. You can enjoy Palringo Instant Messaging which lets you merge all your IM accounts into one, so you can chat with friends on Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo, AOL, Google Talk and others. Setting up your different email accounts on the Wave is simple, and every time you receive a new email you are alerted so you’ll never miss an important message again.

There are apps for social networking sites like Facebook as well as the new Social Hub which groups messages, emails and social network updates in the one place, focussing on the individual. Simply click on a contact and all the communication details associated with them will be displayed. Just like Motorola’s Motoblur, TouchWiz wants to make mobile social networking a breeze for you.

Bluetooth 3.0 debuts on the Samsung Wave S8500, letting you enjoy all the benefits of this latest edition including the option to connect through wireless headphones and quicker file transfers. With Wi-Fi, 3G and GPS support, coupled with a super-fast 1 GHz A8 processor, you can access the web and apps in no time.

For those moments you are not making the most of all the socialising capability of the Wave, you will appreciate the multimedia features onboard. There is a media player and FM radio with the ability to record straight from your favourite station for your listening pleasure. The 5-megapixel camera is high-spec, coming with an LED flash, geo-tagging, smile detection and video function. The media player lets you playback your recorded footage or streamline videos to enjoy on the high resolution screen. The secondary camera means you can make video calls too.
