Sony Ericsson Aspen Review
In a word or two
The Sony Ericsson Aspen is a smartphone which is as functional as it is environmentally-friendly.
The Design
The Sony Ericsson Aspen looks professional. The handset comes in either iconic black or white silver and has a clear, practical layout with a QWERTY keyboard and main keys beneath the screen. The navigation key is framed in chrome which enhances the smart look of the mobile phone.
The newest addition to the GreenHeart series, the Aspen joins the C901 GreenHeart, the Elm, the Hazel, and the Naite, and is similarly made from recycled materials. The GreenHeart range of phones generates approximately 15 per cent less carbon dioxide compared to other handsets, according to Sony Ericsson – so you can truly enjoy your Aspen, guilt-free.
A lot of time and effort has clearly been invested into the Aspen because in addition to its green credentials, it has been designed for both business and social use. You benefit from a full, physical QWERTY keyboard together with a 2.4 inch touchscreen. Few of the Aspen’s rivals can compete with this, for example both a traditional BlackBerry and the Nokia E71 have a QWERTY keyboard together with a non-touch-sensitive screen.
With your Sony Ericsson Aspen, you can alternate between typing a long email using the keyboard and tapping the screen to open a web link. The phone has an accelerometer sensor inbuilt so the screen auto-rotates to display the best view. The screen has a high resolution with 16 million colours so you can navigate the features with ease and clarity. On top of the Windows Mobile 6.5 platform, Sony Ericsson has added the Panel interface, which is also seen on the Xperia X2. This interface lets you access a function with just one press for convenience.
The Sony Ericsson Aspen sits well in your hand and is only slightly taller, a little bit narrower and roughly the same thickness as the iPhone. The shape makes it comfortable to hold and the keypad allows for confident typing.
Sony Ericsson Aspen Specifications
As a Windows Mobile 6.5 handset, the Sony Ericsson Aspen has a number of business-friendly features to help you manage your busy days. There is Pocket Office inbuilt which means you can open Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF documents on your phone, as well as edit and save changes. For peace of mind there is also the Microsoft MyPhone service available, so you can back-up your contacts and files, keep track of your phone if you misplace it, or remotely erase the details if you lose your phone forever.
The Aspen is about more than business, though. There is a range of applications onboard including Skype, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter so you can stay in touch with your world, on the move. The 3.2-megapixel camera with 4x zoom lets you take pictures which you can then share via the social networking sites, email, MMS, or Bluetooth. There is also a music player on the Sony Ericsson Aspen and an FM radio, so you can be aurally entertained as you go about your day.
Considerations
There are significant improvements to the Windows Mobile 6.5.3 OS although it is still not the friendliest of platforms. Sony Ericsson’s interface enhances the experience, however, so the experience is still enjoyable.
Verdict
For a business-oriented smartphone which also offers you fun and a green heart, the Sony Ericsson Aspen is a good choice.
