Sony Ericsson Xperia X3

Overall

As Sony Ericsson´s first Google Android phone, we were expecting something special and they´ve not disappointed. The X3 is in fact the best offering from Sony Ericsson for quite some time. With a lovely (and huge) touchscreen, all the usual smartphone offering and a beautiful design to boot, this is shaping up to be one very decent phone indeed.

The biggest draw for most of you here is going to be that Google Android operating platform, and rightly so. As you´ll probably know already, Android brings everything that Google offer (Search, Mail, Maps, etc.) and integrates it with the phones user interface in a way that makes connecting to and using them as easy as you could possibly imagine. This also works in tandem with things like the phone GPS system, meaning that whenever you use Google Maps, the phone will know exactly where you are and you´ll be able to access things like Wikitude, an application that gives you localised information from Wikipedia based on your location. Sony Ericsson are also the first manufacturer to have a go at re-skinning the standard Android interface, and they´ve done a fantastic job. It´s a lot more animation-full, fun, and downright impressive than all previous iterations of Android on phones such HTC´s.

Aside from all that Android-ness, the X3 is a very decent smartphone in its own right. The first thing that´ll strike you is the screen: at 4 inches, it´s one of the biggest ever released. It´s also extremely clear and sharp, almost as good as Samsung´s recent ground-breaking AMOLED screens in fact. And there´s also some really good news in two other major departments: media playing and memory. Whereas in the past, Sony Ericsson have steadfastly stuck to their decision to allow on SE connectors for headphones, and to use only their own brand of memory cards, the X3 features both a 3.5mm jack socket and full compatibility for the standard (and cheap!) microSD cards. We think these are two very massive improvements over recent SE phones, and give them a double thumbs up.

Finally, the 8MP camera on this thing is as good as any other camera on the market (even as good as some of the newer 12MP cameras, in our honest opinion) so you can snap away happily with that knowledge.

And there we have it – a very, very decent line-up indeed.

Conclusion

Quite simply Sony Ericsson´s best phone for a long, long time... there is in fact nothing disappointing about it at all. So hunt yourself a deal as quickly as possible...
