Toshiba K01 Early Review

In a word or two
The Toshiba K01 lets you communicate how you want – on-screen using the large touchscreen or with the assistance of a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

The Design
Similar in looks to the TG02, the Toshiba K01 also has a 4.1 inch touchscreen but in addition comes with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The clarity and colour on the K01 is superior thanks to its AMOLED screen – in fact, Toshiba uses some of the technology found in its Regza flatscreen TVs for sharper images. The screen is bright and swift too, being capacitive like the TG02 and the iPhone.

Considering there is a QWERTY keyboard behind the screen, the Toshiba K01 is remarkably slim – a miniscule amount thicker than the iPhone 3G S at only 12.9mm. It is a little bit shorter and narrower than the TG02 too so you should have no problem holding, carrying or using this handset.

Beneath the giant screen are the three shortcut keys for instantly launching the call options, the menu and the home screen. The phone comes with apps pre-installed such as YouTube and Facebook and you can decorate the home screen with any others that you find and like from the Windows Marketplace app store – the internal memory can be increased to up to 32GB using a microSD card to accommodate all your extra apps or games.

With such a vibrant and large screen, you can really enjoy all the features of the Toshiba K01. When you slide out the physical keyboard, the screen will automatically rotate to landscape to enhance your typing experience. The keys are all individual and logically laid out on the four rows, including a central space bar.

Toshiba K01 Specifications
For work and play, the Toshiba K01 looks smart and has some smart functions too. Run on the Windows Mobile 6.5 platform, the phone comes with support for Microsoft Exchange so you can set up your Outlook emails on your phone; and the Pocket Office feature means you can open, edit and email a range of Office documents on the move.

Entertainment wise, there is a music player onboard the K01 so you can transfer your songs from your PC using the microSD connection, wirelessly share tracks with friends’ compatible devices using Bluetooth, or download songs online.

Considerations
The 3.15-megapixels camera is decent but is not supported by a flash; and the music player is not complemented by a 3.5mm audio connector.

Verdict
The Toshiba K01 looks set to be a popular addition to the smartphone market thanks to its combination of vibrant touchscreen and full physical keyboard. Full review is coming soon.
